OpenGL problems after changing gfx adapter (nvidia -> radeon)

Problem: When I run glxinfo (as user, or sudo) , I do get this error:

$ glxinfo
name of display: :0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

After googling a bit, I understood that this might have been caused by** installing and un-installing** the closed source nvidia gfx driver.
The un-installer seems erroneously not to reactivate reliably all the default drivers which come with the openSUSE system.

Essentially, this is the history of my machine/problem:

  • I started with a fresh installation of openSUSE 42.3 Leap
(with an NVIDIA “GeForce 7600 GS” gfx adapter installed (Hardware: DELL Optiplex 360). - The stability & performance with the default **nouveau **
driver was really bad, so I decided to install the appropriate closed source NVIDIA drivers (nvidiaG02-304.135) as described in the support database Portal [SDB] (https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers). - The system then was much more reliable and performant, but still not acceptable. So I un-installed the closed source driver (again as described in the SDB)
  • Then I **replaced **
the **NVIDIA **gfx card by an AMD Radeon HD 6450 adapter. - Finally I rebooted the system, logged on (Plasma 5) and checked the driver: “radeon” - as expected. The system seems to work fine now, ***only that the tools glxinfo/glxgears etc. all fail as described above… ***

So far I have re-installed all the MESA drivers - as suggested by some posters - but to no avail.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Cheers,
Hardy

Just to be clear: running it with sudo won’t work.
But it should of course work when you run it as user inside the graphical session.

  • Finally I rebooted the system, logged on (Plasma 5) and checked the driver: “radeon” - as expected. The system seems to work fine now, ***only that the tools glxinfo/glxgears etc. all fail as described above… ***

Hm. If there would be an actual problem with GLX/OpenGL, Plasma 5 wouldn’t start at all.

Still, please post the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, maybe it shows something.

And just for understanding: how exactly did you install/uninstall the nvidia driver?
Did you use nvidia’s .run installer, or the rpm packages from the repo?
Maybe try to run “sudo mkinitrd” (especially if you used the .run installer, the rpm packages should do that automatically when you uninstall them), maybe there’s still nvidia stuff in the initrd or the radeon stuff is missing there.

Also, check that you have kernel-firmware installed.

Hi wolfi!
Thanks for your patience with me and my many problems !!!

Right below are the possibly most interesting lines of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

**
Thales:~ #** cat | grep \(EE\)

I will copy the complete Xorg.0.log file to some additional posts to follow soon (as the forum doesn’t allow me to past the complete thing).

For the installation of the nvidia driver: I just followed the description here https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers
Details:

Add nvidia repo:

Un-install drm-kmp-default":

  • Back in Yast, select “Software Management”
  • now I filtered for “drm-kmp-default” and marked it for deletion
  • Then “Accept” …
  • Closed Yast etc. and rebooted

When the system was up again, I logged on and executed the remaining steps:

  • run Yast, select “Software Management”
  • View>Repositories
  • select the nvidia repo
  • now I checked the entry “x11-video-nvidiaG02” - which then also triggered the selection of “nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default” and “nvidia-computeG02”
  • now “Accept” …

Use the system for some days…
Then I decided to change the gfx adapter. First I needed to un-install the nvidia driver and to re-install the drm-kmp-default:

The de-installation went as follows:

  • run Yast, select “Software Management”
  • View>Repositories
  • select the nvidia repo
  • this time I tagged all installed entries “x11-video-nvidiaG02”, “nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default” and “nvidia-computeG02” for deletion.
  • now “Accept” …
  • Then I re-installed the drm-kmp-default
  • finally I checked that the nvidia.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d has been removed by the de-installation procedure - which was the case
  • shutdown

Replacement of the gfx adapter:

  • I physically replaced the nvidia gfx adapter by the radeon card
  • started the PC
  • logged on (Plasma 5)
  • tested glxinfo and glxgears with this result:
hardy@Thales:~> glxinfo
name of display: :0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

hardy@Thales:~> glxgears
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
hardy@Thales:~>

I did not execute “sudo mkinitrdm” explicitly. But I will do so now.

As stated on top, the complete Xorg.o.log will follow in acceptably sized parts in following posts.

Did you make a xorg.conf file while you used NVIDIA? If so rename or remove it or any other xorg changes you made

No, I didn’t create one, nor did I make use of the nvidia tools (nvdock) which would have allowed to do that for me.
I also checked the folder /etc/X11/, which does not show any *.conf file.

In the meantime I did execute “sudo mkinitrd”, rebooted an tested glxinfo - still the same error.

Also I double-checked that “drm-kmp-default” is installed, which is the case.

I’d guess/hope that the root cause of my problem here is related to the aforementioned error logged in Xorg.0.log:

(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Cheers,
Hardy

I forgot to mention that I have also made the following, possibly related, changes to my system… .Sorry for that…
The following procedure was the very first installation/un-installation procedure I did execute with my new opensuse 42.3 Leap system:

  • Installed “Mesa-demo-x”
  • Changed the “Compositor Settings for Desktop Effects” as follows (which is still the active setting):
• Deactivated “Enable compositor on startup”
  • Defined the “Rendering backend” to make use of “XRender”
And I also forgot to mention, that I also and initially installed the SDB:nvidia driver the “zypper-way”:

hardy@Thales:~> su -
Thales:~ # zypper addrepo -f https://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/leap/42.3 nvidia
Thales:~ # zypper install-new-recommends

Followed by:

  • Started Yast, then Software Management
  • Selected “X11-video-nvidiaG02” ( which is for GeForce 6xxx and newer GPUs)
  • The installer alerted that the nvidia-gfxG02-kmp is missing/cannot be provided…
Solution was option 1: Install nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default-304.135_k4.4.76_1-x86_64 (with vendor change)
Note: This also installed the gcc48 and other stuff.

Later I un-installed it with Yast as describe earlier (and here: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers)

Indeed.
The message about “fglrx” is normal (if fglrx is not installed), but “glx” fails to load because Xorg’s libglx is missing.
It probably didn’t properly get restored by the nvidia uninstallation somehow (nvidia replaces libglx with their own version).

Try to reinstall xorg-x11-server:

sudo zypper in -f xorg-x11-server

That should fix it I hope.

I’m even more surprised now that Plasma5 would work.:open_mouth:
(well, maybe setting the compositing backend to XRender helped here, Plasma itself probably uses OpenGL directly, not via GLX…)

This did the trick!!! (forced reinstallation of xorg-x11-server)

I want to thank all posters here, especially wolfi!!!

Beeing an openSUSE user and fan for like 10 years now, I always got technical support here
in the forums in unrivaled manner.

Cheers,
Hardy

PS: The installer mentioned explicitly the problematic status of the shared library “libglx.so”

...snip...
Additional rpm output:
        Updating /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager...
update-alternatives: warning: /etc/alternatives/libglx.so is dangling; it will be updated with best choice
update-alternatives: using /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/xorg/xorg-libglx.so to provide /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so (libglx.so) in auto mode

It’s 2021 and I /just/ switched from a 2009 Nvidia GT240 to a 2013 AMD/ATI Radeon R9 290, mainly because Nvidia dropped support of the G03 drivers and openSUSE 15.2 followed suit.

Once the radeon driver was working, I got my graphical desktop back. Then, I tried to launch a 3D app and it crashed. After reading that the 3D app wanted the proprietary drivers, I installed AMDGPU-PRO drivers. 3D, i.e. GL apps, still didn’t work.

glxgears didn’t work. glxinfo didn’t work. /var/log/Xorg.0.log showed that GL was disabled, along with DRI3.

I found this thread, though old…

Reinstalling xorg-x11-server totally worked!

I did the YaST route to force a reinstall. YaST popped up a list of dependencies that needed to be redirected for xorg-x11-server to be installed. I blindly accepted.

Reboot. Worked.
