The Story:
I had installed openSUSE 12.2, everything worked like a charm, fglrx-12 or 11 or whatever was installed, forgot it. vaapi+xvba worked like a charm
I could play games in windowed mode normally.
I upgraded my system to openSUSE 12.3 = epic fail (Graphic Driver)
I completely reinstalled openSUE 12.2 (with formatting the drive, so everything is being deleted)
Now I have openSUSE 12.2 again with the latest fglrx-legacy from AMD website (I’m not going to use the repositories)
vaapi+xvba (Hardware Acceleration 100% works, better that with the old one :))
Now I’m no longer able to use OpenGL Applications in WINDOWED MODE, only Full Screen works, why?? :’(
I prefer to play games in windowed mode (say what you want, i like windowed mode)
What happens exactly?
- Open game (native linux - steam or open source games; or windows games - wine-1.6rc3)
- Still standing picture - no kind of animation (frozen screen in other words)
- Click another window, click back the game window (10 frames or whatever continues, than freeze again)
- Last step again and again
- The game itself keeps running, only the graphics hangs until i select another window and back again than for 0.5 seconds the graphic buffer continues (10 frames or whatever)
In full screen mode there are no problems works like a charm and better than with the old fglrx driver
I probably can live with the behavior of full screen
but i want to know what could be the problem
is it driver specific or Linux specific - my old installation was a bit dependency broken - the new one is fresh and good going
sorry for my bad and broken english I’m Austrian

for next time (i don’t have a good idea how to rescue this time) you
should have just restored 12.2 from your pre-upgrade backup…
all three supported upgrade paths include warning that any upgrade
may fail and the importance in backing up, before you begin the upgrade:

for next time i will dd my whole drive to my external 4TB HDD :shame: (enough space for a backup, but still forgotten, WHAT A SHAME) before updating
as is know fglrx will support the new X.org 1.13 in 6 month or so? right? Than I will update to openSUSE 12.3 or 13.1 if it is released
But as I said, in FULL SCREEN MODE there are no problems, so this is the EOL of windowed gaming for me :’(
thanks anyway

Finally I found the problem why OpenGL in KWin Windows is standing still (stuck on the same frame until i change focus)
You need to change the Compositing type of KWin from XRender to OpenGL, that is what I had before the reinstall lol!
The XRender probably won’t run well with OpenGL-based stuff, but I don’t know
btw I keep the XRender because of better performance actually lower CPU usage ] and the effects looks better for me
