I apologize in advance because I am new to OpenSUSE and Linux in general so I do not know if this is the right forum or if the information I provide is relevant.
I am using OpenSUSE 12.3 (x86_64) and ran into a problem with OpenGL and with some programs not opening. I do not know if these are related or not, but I think they are. I keep getting a “Could not initialize OpenGL” problem when I try to activate desktop effects in KDE. I was wondering if it had to do with my graphics driver. I tried all that I could think of and I could not figure it out. Here is the information I got from the terminal.

In the future, please also use code tags ("#" in the advanced message
editor) so the output is formatted more cleanly for those reading on the
web interface.
What video driver are you using? Did you install the proprietary ATI
drivers, or are you using the open source driver?
If you run a program that uses openGL from a terminal window, what
specific error messages does that generate?
Thank you for the speedy reply.
I don’t think I installed the property drivers.
When I run Blender in the terminal I get:
Color management: using fallback mode for management
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 155 (ATIFGLEXTENSION)
Minor opcode of failed request: 66 ()
Serial number of failed request: 33
Current serial number in output stream: 33
And from a game dungeon crawl stone soup I get
DB directory "/var/games/crawl/saves/db/" does not exist and I can't create it.

I do not actually know if these are OpenGL applications, the programs fail to start, but don’t normally give error messages. I have vary little knowledge about this sort off stuff as I was moved to linux out of necessity and have not had a lot of experience. If you have a program you could tell me that apsolutly runs on OpenGL I will run it.

Looks like it’s looking for the ATI FGLRX driver. If you have an ATI
card (looks like you do), check and see which driver you need and try
installing that.
Blender is, IIRC, an OpenGL application.

None of that is related to OpenGL. Do you get any indication at all that
this game is failing because of an OpenGL problem?

It’s OK - Blender should, as I said, be requiring OpenGL as I recall.
The error messages do indicate a video issue, so that’s a good place to
start.
Let’s start by getting the ATI proprietary drivers installed. Have you
seen the Wiki page that covers how to do that?
Sounds like a Video chipset issue to me, particularly for older hardware. Still, one could always give a newer kernel a try to see if it might help. I have a blog on the subject you can read here:
@Jim: I have nothing connecting the game to OpenGL, or rather I did not know whether it was a separate or a connected problem.
I have read a little, that is how I was able to get the information in the first post. I know about the one-click install and will try to install it, but which one should I use, AMD FGLRX or the AMD FGLRX LEGACY? I know vary little about hardware, sorry for my ignorance.
The kernel is where your drivers are loaded and using the latest can often speed up your CP and fix issues, perhaps you did not know you had. It is always worth a try I think.

The error messages displayed have to do with being unable to create a
database. I understand you’re new, so it’s OK, don’t worry about it.
That won’t have anything to do with the video controller.

I saw the output you posted from lspci, but it’s not clear what the card
is. What can you tell us about the system? What I’ve been able to
determine is that the system might be some sort of Samsung laptop,
perhaps?
I know vary little about my system, I did not buy it. It is a HP laptop and had Windows 8 on it when I received it, it’s is a UEFI system. On my screen in the right hand corner it says ENVY m6.

Looks like there are a number of different models - on the bottom, you
might find a sticker that says something like:
HP ENVY m6-1101ek
or similar - a four digit number followed by two letters at the end. If
you can tell us what that is, we can find the specifications and that’ll
tell us what the video controller is. You might also find it on the box
or in the instruction manual.
Alternatively, if you still have Windows installed on it, you can go into
Device Manager and look at the video driver there to see what it says it
is.
That’ll help us determine which driver is most appropriate.
I did find a yellow and white sticker on the box that has 00106AP 01-COMP, over the bar code. This is the only information I can find that resembles what you have said. I don’t have windows on the computer anymore, due to some problems I had with it that made it unusable.

Are there any stickers on the computer itself? On the bottom, or maybe a
model number/serial number barcode?
Sometimes the manufacturer puts those things inside the battery
compartment, too - if the battery pulls off the bottom, check inside
there as well.

Hi
If not, dmidecode… eg;

Well, upon giving it a second to think about … I’d suggest trying out the OSS drivers first and see if you’re satisfied with the performance (once you get them working). If you feel the need to squeeze for more out of blender, then try out the prop. catalyst/fglrx to see if that helps at all

Perfect.
I think that came to mind because my wife’s got an HP laptop as well, and
I needed that information.
OK, so looking at the product specifications on the HP website, the video
card is and AMD Radeon HD 7660G.
Digging around (and it took a fair bit of digging to find the
compatibility list for some reason), it looks like fglrx is what you
want. That family of cards is supported in AMD Catalyst 13.11 (possibly
earlier), so let’s install that with the one-click method (the “easy
way”).
Thank you for all of the help, I installed fglrx, but nothing seems to have changed. Is there something I need to do to activate the driver? I don’t think there would be, but it would be best to ask.

Rebooting should take care of it.
You can determine if it’s loaded by running:
/sbin/lsmod | grep fglrx
If it’s loaded, you’ll see it in the output.
You can also try running fgl_glxgears to see what kind of performance
it’s giving.
