hi,
i am facing problems with installation of open suse. i made a live usb, but when i tried to boot it failed to. also, i played around with the boot order of the bios, but i still haven’t had any luck. can someone please tell me what is wrong.
Hi,
Could you give some more details as to what happened? When you say that the boot from USB failed, do you mean that it failed to start the boot process altogether, or that it has errors during boot that prevent it from continuing?
Also, are you sure your computer supports USB boot?
Also did you run a media check on the USB device.
my computer failed to detect the presence of the live usb, so instead of starting the open suse installation, it started windows xp. and yes, my computer supports usb boot.
from my bios, i disabled the hard disk that contained xp, it told me that that it could not detect any portable device.
i’m sure that my computer can boot from portable devices because in the bios there is an option for disabling/enabling booting from an usb.
also, i know the the live usb was created properly because open suse image writer gave me a “successful!” after finishing the job.
so i am quite confused now.
Again just to clear the basics, in the BIOS USB HDD or USB stick are listed in the boot order? BIOS boot order -> DVD/CD, HDD, USB HDD, Floppy?
Does your system board manual indicate special requirements for boot devices?
yes, my usb stick is listed in the boot order.
actually the motherboard is quite old, but i don’t think there are any special requirements for boot devices.
my previous posts were about my desktop, now even my laptop which runs windows 7 also raises the same problems
i downloaded the 64-bit version of opensuse for the laptop. i have tried all the possible combinations in the bios as well as in making a live cd:
-
i tried the normal method, using image writer, creating the live usb was a success, but the os didn’t boot.
>so, opened the bios and pushed the usb on the top of the order, didn’t work again and started windows.
>i tried the f12 boot menu, but my usb wasn’t shown in it. -
using peazip, i manually extracted the iso to the usb (i’m a genius)
>obviously, it failed, but still instead of loading windows, i got a blank screen with a flickering underscore. -
this time i used UNetBootin to make the live usb
>ha! this time i atleast got something. the UNetBootin thing booted, when i clicked on Default (the first option), but it said the image file was corrupted.
>i think it’s because UNetBootin doesn’t support 11.3. i’m sure the iso was downloaded correctly, because i did a torrent download
i have restarted my computers atleast 20 times each!
thanks
I think you were halfway home at that point. IMO, you should try this USB again but if you get to grub boot add the option “nomodset”. Otherwise you did do the media check?

Have you burned a DVD/CD or used the network install? IIRC, if you manage to boot and install from a DVD/CD or network install, you can clone your install to a USB.
yea’, think i will do a network install now,
thanks
