Open SUSE 11.1 vs Windows 7

Hi evrybody first of all i want to say i am new to linux i have try a lote of linux option and non of them was so “Stabile” how all say.
Now about opensuse 11.1 i have get the dvd iso and burn it to a DVD all fine until now .
on my first look on the setup instaler i notice that how stupid is made the partition manager option you realy have to be very stupid to create that but with some help i have manage to work around i selec to inport a mount point made with ubuntu the rest was ok in my first run of the suse i try to conect to internet by using sudo comand but surprise sudo comands are not working in suse 11.1 then i open my other pc and try to find up how do i conect using pppoe in suse 11.1 i have find some forums tutorials to instal kinternet then go to yast run dsl setup bla bla bla and after 2h of doing this kind of staff i decide that i am waisting my time it sucks i have to uninstal it and instal win7 at list in that i can conect to internet in exactly 5 min and 7 mouse clicks ,and by the way on my first instal on suse i had to get out for 3 h and when i got back and wanted to try the suse 11.1 it did not start i even try the repair option but nothing so i reinstal it again .
so stable my ass .
in linux now it like windows 95 maybe it will come a time someday when it will be gr8 for desktop but i dought that day it soon at list not for open suse.

Now something about win7 well first of all i testit on a old pc pntiu 4 3G ,no video card and 1,5 memori so not that good but it worked ok i got the aero look and a lote of visual efect on a onboord videocard with 8 M memory prety cool right but my big surprise was when i go to task manager to so little tasks runing not like in xp or vista all theat after i shut dowun acounts manager becuse i am single user on the pc .it realy blow my away how win7 worked ofcorse i got some problems with it buy i resolv it even if some of you maight say it not right to compare a beta with a final release but to tell you the true i wold prfer the beta win7 then reinstaling again open suse 11.1 and one last qestion in suse i have to set up my screan resoltion evrytime i started the pc dont know why ???

sory for typig so much and for my bad eng but im very tyerd 16h with no slleepppppi am just angry when i see how stupid some devolepers can be .

I am sure they must feel the same upon seeing how stupid some users can be.

That’s not even a real comparison, you’re just saying how you hate OpenSUSE 11.1 and how you love Windows 7. And if you would do a comparison, at least compare OpenSUSE 11.0 to the alternatives as it’s a rock-solid release compared to 11.1.

I also don’t agree on how you insult the developers and calling them stupid, if you think they are stupid why don’t and your amazingly intelligent brain learn the necessary stuff and change all the stupid-developer-crap-and-stability-my-ass parts into what you find to be ideal?
Don’t forget that most of OpenSUSE (and other linux distributions) was created by voluntary developers, if you dislike a part of their software, just kindly let them know and perhaps they might agree with you and make the necessary changes but don’t go yelling around like a child because he’s just had some problems. And if you want to yell at the software creators then first buy a commercial support subscription like you would with Windows and then tell them.

One last note: if you ever have a problem with a Linux distribution and don’t want to buy a commercial support subscription then describe your problem(s) as detailed and possible and someone will be kind enough to help you but keep in mind to mind the language (no insulting and yelling)…

Pwnd.
And for the thread starter, the title of this forum begins with:
A friendly place to converse about your adventures with openSUSE. Do not blame openSUSE - how you connect to the Internet with sudo command??
Instead of trolling open a post in Network section. And if you don’t want to use this distribution, why don’t you just leave?

xeon: You´ve come to the wrong place, buddy. Your post doesn´t say a thing about what you complain about. It´s simply not readable.
Here´s another hint: Wenn du deutsch sprichst, wende dich einfach an mich. ^^

Obviously not too many of them since many non-Debian ones don’t usually use Sudo out of the box.

My guess is that you went with the Ubuntu default partition and when confronted with choices, did not know what to do. A common issue for people moving from Ubuntu (as their only Linux experience) to one with more choices.

That’s why I recommend Ubuntu for beginners and then when they are ready to advance, go to openSUSE where there are more choices and greater ease in making a system to your needs (but first you have to learn what those needs are).

Uninstalling sounds more like a Windows mentality,

If you prefer Windows 7 then use Windows 7. Why do people think they need to try Linux if they are happy with some other operating system? To be elite? To be rebels?

Or is this an “I half-***ed tried Linux and want to feel better by saying how much better Microsoft Windows 7 because I couldn’t understand Linux” type post?

Wait until you get out into the world, then you will likely realize how non-stupid most developer are and how to better go about getting into Linux.

Or not.

The Installer is confusing, when it comes to partition options. It was very noticeable, I took a few goes until I got into the expert mode, and checked that fine control had not been sacrificied. Access Denied

Isn’t it a shame, that openSUSE isn’t beginner friendly enough? Why send folk to Mint, or PC OS etc. What do we need to make installing OS intuitive to noobs, without sacrificing the benefits to a technical user?

  • Solid Release ie. 11.0 edition with a sexy name, not 11.1 big beta for SLE

  • Incorporation of Useability Feedback into Installer

  • Consistent checkbox ] Details for Advanced Users

Probably a satellite based in a favourable legal jurisdiction, to handle any nasty proprietary stuff (probably multi-media).

Come people lets forgive xeon1.

xeon pls learn to appreciate other peoples effort in providing such wonderful resources. Ask for when you encounter problems. Its very easy.

I don t know what happens with this guy…
I had a PC since 1990…
first DOS
After MS WIN/95/98/ME/XP
After a bad crash and loosing important files i quit MS,quit PC-Virus, Hacker-Attacks and all other promlems of MS-Users!

And i will never leave you!!!

Maybe this user-“anonimus” was G.W.Bush or Bill Gates…
Sorry Linux is only for users with a IQ 85+
rotfl!

I actually started with windows 95…

I had always used windows up until a few years ago when I went exploring into linux… I still use windows for things Linux can’t do. But I do like openSUSE very much, its my number 1 choice for linux. As a Windows user for practically my whole life. I went straight to opensuse and have had no problems with it…

Well… I have had problems. Like the driver for my WLAN card was not supported… But I enjoyed spending hours even days working out and learning how to use ndiswrapper… (back then completly new to linux)

I’m still learning to this day. To be very honest, all this for free? The developers need a full blown holiday  openSUSE is the work of genius.

I don’t like Ubuntu as my OS (personally speaking), maybe because I have a different brain? I don’t know. I do like using thier live cd out and about though. :stuck_out_tongue:

The openSUSE gnome “Computer” menu. I like it… a lot.

There are too many good things to say about openSUSE.

I really need this months ATI drivers, release them please ATi!! :’(

Yes you say the tru!!!

11.1 Repository has been up for a few days.

My feeling is a stupid user can make the distribution more look stupid:’(

Ok, let us come back to the topic title - openSUSE 11.1 vs Windows 7. Anyone has any real experience to compare? I would like to hear about this. I will never get a chance because I stopped paying Dollars to Micro$oft almost a decade ago!

I demoed KDE4 + Composite effects to some hardcore Win users and I can see their sad faces. Common public can not understand other technical features of Linux that easily because they always feel the OS only through the “desktop”!

By the by. I really agree with the following discussion when it comes to 11.1 installation change related to partitioning.

Uwe: I hope that wasn’t your contact picture you sent though! LOL

Thanks for the heads up though…

Well, you can grab the Windows 7 Beta for free (as also a test license) and see what it’s about.

My first impressions are Windows 7 will do a nice job to replace XP. It seems very responsive and so far the (limited) testing I’ve done reveal no big issues. (It also makes me glad I’ve been pushing to skip Vista and hang on for the next version - like many others are too -)

I’d rather compare Windows 7 to Vista and say the chances for Windows 7 to bring back a good product are there. Vista might be stabilizing… but it’s taken toooo long and brings too little.

Comparing Windows 7 to openSUSE or any other Linux distribution (as well as Mac), is like comparing apples with pears. - no pun intended -.

All these systems can do all your every day tasks and more… the choice for using each OS comes with what is needed to be done and which applications you need to run.

For every day use / office environments I think openSUSE is a good choice and has been for a couple of years. It can offer what you need as long as you don’t have some special type Windows only application.
The next question is how your end users will be able to adjust to a new OS.

The main thing lacking openSUSE/Linux comes down to ease of use as soon as trouble hits… ehm… the screen.
As soon as you have a situation where peoples perspective is so that they believe it won’t be any different when they need help if they are running Windows, Linux, Mac or any other product… and they will be helped with the same ease and swiftness… That will probably be a point where you can really start comparing the products.

Until then I think it’s about choice and most will end up using a blend.

Hi all!

Open source rocks! I’ve used the Debian-based Ubuntu for some time, but then, I’m all KDE, so I was quite happy to lay my hands on openSUSE 11.1, in which all the things were corrected which I lacked in previous distros. Nevertheless, I must say windows 7 is a strong enemy. And you always have to accept the merits of a strong enemy.

Windows 7 is stable as hell (I’ve worked with beta for two weeks with no crash or even freezing !!! so far). It seems to me they have solved the protected memory issue at last (certainly a healthy thing for parallel processing). Plus it is a lot faster than vista (and as fast as xp but with hell of a lot more apps). And you get a user interface, that lets you customize many things. And here comes the pain. First look at windows 7, I could tell I have seen this somewhere before. Hm. KDE 4? Why not? Yeah. MS: “Hey people, look at this stuff. It’s open source, so why not steal it?” And they did  And also the .ODT format (in Wordpad, to my great surprise, of course it barely works, but is there) Well, my very first thought about windows 7 was that it was a game, but a good one. And a most stable one. But since then, I’ve come to like it. It’s nice, fast and reliable (even though it’s beta, something uncommon with MS… yeah, I remember vista). But then, the dark sectors of my mind always tell me that this is pure MS, profit-oriented stuff. That is, they never would have began work on such a great stuff if linux wasn’t so good. I cannot and will not trust something that has money at its heart and concentrates only on that. When economical interest stands in the way of development, only because someone in the higher bidders said that the new, better features could only be included in the next release, you can only hope for the open source to save the day. So I very much hope that future linux distros (and now it doesn’t matter, I think, whether it is Ubuntu or openSUSE) will beat windows in every single centimeter. That will certainly make MS a lot more (professional) user-friendly:D

Upgrade to KDE4.2, which is far more stable, and let’s talk again?

KDE/KDE4 - openSUSE

I admit the OpenSuse 11.1 out of box is a bunch of bugs. However, if you update and upgrade it’s like heaven on earth.
