I don’t think moving to closed source is the solution. Next, moving to Windows is the solution for not knowing how to do things on linux.
Could it be that the problems originate in the fact that the documents are on a Windows partition that’s not mounted correctly, i.e. read/write?
Did OP try to remove the OpenOffice config files? (open a terminal window and type ‘rm -rf ~/.ooo3’)
Did you, during update/install/reinstall, tell the software installer to ignore dependency conflicts?
I manage a couple of , OO.o using, companies’ networks. There’s nor more complaints compared to when they were still on MS Office, nor requests for roll-back to MS as well.
So, in short:
Uninstall all OpenOffice packages
Remove the config folder
Re-install OpenOffice
Get back to us with results.
That’s probably not worth it for me, because vmware is already installed and works flawlessly.
Reason i wanted to fix openoffice was to open documents and attachments under Linux not windows. I believe vmware is the top dog. And vmware server does everything, workstation oses and servers for learning purposes.also has great usb support. I already have an xppro setup.
anyone know if crossover eight allows running yahoo messenger, msn or aim?
A lot of these things are related to forcing the sqr peg in the round hole, whilst there is some compatibility it isn’t transparent.
You’ll find these problems across a lot of things like excel vs calc, doc in win vs doc in OO, so you confirm presentation created in MS vs one in OO.
So what is the complaint that you can’t create a doc in one and in the other have true transparency, well I’m not surprised more surprised others are. I bet if the presentation is created in OO on ms it works the same on Linux OO.
Whilst compatibility has come a long way it is a moving target, moral of the story if you want a doc to behave the same then use the app that created it.
Thanks so much crossover office is working great.
I even notice the docs opening faster under linux.
But let’s be honest nobody wants to sit around solving
dependencies in openoffice. In my opinion if openoffice worked before it still should or it is buggy. I don’t usually have that problem with ms office. on to my other question will windows messengers work under crossover office maybe as an unsupported app?
kopete is good but lacks all the features of the regular instant messengers. And what about IE8 and Chrome?
I really hate the fact that so many apps are available for windows and not for linux.
Do you know when the regular edition will be released?
IE7 works great under crossover.
But I’ve had problems with other apps under wine.
I might have to keep vmware around just for those apps.
But being able to run all the office 2007 apps is a breakthrough.
Hopefully now I can open emails with office attachments flawlessly. It works great with word and powerpoint docs so far.
Being able to read emails in linux is useful because vmware kept locking up when I had a lot of things running.
While reading all this thread, i was thinking that i am in Windozz forum.
Why all windozzz software to use in Linux. Whats the point?
Mostly to debug the error in Linux is recommended and that led to a solution. A lot of gurus around here, who can help.
And if windozzz soft are that much in need, so better to use windozz OS then…VB is your friend in this case.
problem is msoffice never caused me this many issues, I installed it, then it was done. I don’t need to know vb if the program doesn’t crash. Also most people use windows, so if I use linux I need to find the workarounds not them.
Linux is great and I prefer using it.
But I still don’t feel like troubleshooting open office.
especially if I already fixed it 3 times in a row.
Time is to valuable to waste for that.
It won’t but microsoft does not care because they have a near monopoly. I just want to be able to use my pc to open attachments.
openoffice kept breaking. When it worked it was fine.
But I do not desire to sit around troubleshooting dependencies.
Most people will send ms office docs not open office.
So if openoffice can’t open msoffice docs it is useless. in a world where openoffice has the monopoly it would be different. But being able to run msoffice under linux solves the problem. I don’t owe homage to sunmicrosystems or microsoft.
Really there should be a new law that all software makers make a version of their software for all oses. But Microsoft does underhanded things to purposely make sure their software doesn’t.
So I was Impressed with crossover 8 because I never saw office07 or ie7 run in linux. Some web developers make their webpages only work with ie. That is the only time I need to use it because I prefer Firefox.

A bit of a sideways question. Are the problem documents created on
MSO 2007? The file formats for MSO2007 as documented are internally
inconsistent to partially incoherent. See of they work saved as MSO
2000 versions.
