Only commandline, no GUI

Hi. I Installed openSUSE 11.2 now. something goes wrong with the installation and and I don’t get no GUI just the command line. It say something about it during installation and I get the error that it can’t connect to internet either.

Please advice me on this. My plan is to run this installation clean on my server.

thanks

If you login there
Did you try typing: startx
hit enter

If that fails try the failsafe boot.

I tried it now but it don’t do nothing for me. It say like this.

giving up.
xinit: no such file or directory (errno 2). unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3). server error.

a couple of lines up from that it say this.
usernameUhh, to many forks, PIDs got reused, we’re confused at 470158 startpar 5567 fork - 513

this is the error messages I get when I install.

the required packages were not installed (minimal installation) or the graphics card

is not properly supported

as a fallback the text font-end of YaST will guide you through the installation.
an error occurred while connecting to the server
details: [1] error trying to read from http://download.opensuse.org/update/22.2

download (curl) error for http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.2/content
error code: connection failed
error message: could not resolve host download.opensuse.org

I would first check the CD or DVD and try to reinstall.

I have tried to reinstall it twice. I don’t know if is a must I have a OS installed? I have never worked with openSUSE so I don’t really know. Not that really experienced with servers either.

currently working on a Hp proliant ml115

Did you try failsafe boot?

I don’t even know how to failboot on this server
but I talked to the hp support and the server do not support the openSUSE just the SUSE linux enterprice

so I have to look into getting that. Thanks for reply guys

Hang on - what did you just say?

*but I talked to the hp support and the server do not support the openSUSE just the SUSE linux enterprice

But you said you installed openSUSE 11.2
So did you actually install 11.2?

If you did - the failsafe should be seen at the boot menu
like here: except this is a 11.1, but 11.2 is the same
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/5674/pic8f.png

It seem to install but fail on the graphic driver and network driver. And it don’t got the failsafe boot I only get two options and that is to enter the bios setup and some other thing.

They got a list on some operating systems that they support for this server and openSUSE is not on the list so I guess I have to do some modifications to the server before I can run the openSUSE. I successfully installed a windows server 2008 on the same type of server yesterday.

link to os list

I don’t get that screen what you get on that pic. I think this is not installed at all because on reboot i just pop up to choosing bios and boot from device

Do you know what gfx card and nic it uses ? You can get this info from your Windows 2008 machine if it’s the same model.

ok, when you purchased the machine did you specify it be preloaded
with any of the listed SUSE Linux Enterprise Server packages?

if so, then you are in the wrong forum…you need to be over at
forums.novell.com

i am not certain if SLES includes a GUI (windows like environment) or
not…so, if you don’t have X included then you can’t have
“windows”…and, servers don’t need windows anyway…just wastes CPU
cycles…

the folks in the correct forum can help you sort it out…

No offense, on your server? Servers need no GUI, go hardcore!

What happens if you login and type:

startx

That’s a pretty harsh thing to say…

first, a linux system is a linux system, he might not have Graphical Environment packages installed, which everyone can install.

second, he’s most likely on runlevel 3, which could be related to a normal server install, and in this case, it’s even more simple to debug any probable error or problem and make it work before changing for init 5 no matter what road you take.

Now, why would a Graphical Package would burn cpu cycles? This depends much on what kind of servers people are running and how many. Windows does sell a lot because it’s made for dummies, and you can pretty much play administrator for a server with the available GUI administration packages. I would believe that’s one of oldest goals for Linux massification… Not only eye-candy/productivity on the desktop, but aswel on the server side, keeping all it’s natural existence strengths.

Anyways, a server is as good as it’s administrator, no matter if it’s pure VT100 by serial, local/remote command line or even local/remote graphical.

No the server comes clean, I am trying to install openSUSE.

Well the GUI is suppose to be there right? Dummy or not I just don’t got the time to learn different right now so I need the GUI. And even if the command line was the only way to go I can’t because the installation of the OS don’t stick(not there). It install fine with exception of graphic card driver, and after I installed it I get command line but on reboot I don’t, it is like the installation never took place. I usually don’t give up but with this I have.

nothing happens when I type startx it just try to start something but it don’t.

i didn’t say you were a dummy…did i?

if you are trying to install from an openSUSE 11.2 DVD or Live CD
downloaded from http://software.opensuse.org/112/

and md5sum checked the downloaded iso prior to burning the install disk

and checked the install disk this way: http://tinyurl.com/yajm2aq
prior to beginning the install

and elected to install a desktop environment like KDE, Gnome or one
of the others offered…

then i guess your problem is a graphics driver problem…which is
because, as the HP folks told you the hardware is supported by SUSE
Linux Enterprise Server, but not openSUSE (though that doesn’t make
full sense to me)…

suggest you go to http://www.novell.com/linux/ and pick the server and
support package you need…

or, if you want to continue trying here i’ll ask nmarques78 to take
over and help you since he thinks i was too ‘harsh’…

I did not mean any of you called me a dummy, I understand what you meant by it.

I appreciate all the help I get from you guys.

And like you it don’t make sense to me either in a way because it is build on the same foundation right?

anyway I will try out the SUSE linux enterprise, see if runs on the system before I take this openSUSE any further.

I will get back to this thread again so be ready
