Only boots on 2nd reboot

Hi all, 1st time user of SUSE. My install went well with no issues but I have a few bugs/issues to work out. The biggest one being that my system only boots on the 2nd attempt, that is I have to press the reset button. When it 1st boots I go to a limited command line. I then enter “startx”. I get: waiting for device /dev/disk/by-id/ata-QUANTAUM_FIREBALL"hard drive model"-part2 not found – exiting to /bin/sh

I reboot and system works fine. This only seems to happen from cold boot. It appears the system is not finding my HD/mounting? What do I have to do for the system to find it? Thanks.

No one knows? Is there not enough info?

I think your hard drive is taking a long time to come ready.

One test would to start from a cold boot as you have been doing, but enter the
BIOS setup. Do not enter anything, but look to see if your hard drive shows up
in the list. Then wait for a minute or so, and then exit without saving. What
happens?

lwfinger, thanks for helping :). The BIOS is detecting the hard drive and is setup for autodection.

Any other suggestions?

Interesting. Tell us your partitioning please (or make a screenshot of the YAST-Output).

No. I’m out of ideas. Did delaying a bit help?

Thanks Mask. Will this work?

Disk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40027029504 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4866 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x225b225b

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 193 1550241 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 * 194 4866 37535872+ 83 Linux

No, delaying did not help any

Bump. Any suggestions?

Yes. Please try to use your installation disc for an automated repair. Boot it and select “automated repair”. Good luck.
