Problems connecting to a software ... There was a (possibly temporary) problem

This has happened several times in the last few days. If it happens occasionally, well, accidents happen. But it is all too often now. Does anyone know the real problem causing it to happen over and over?

Inter net problems. Perhaps the mirror you use is having problems

BTW, when you were forced to choose OTHER VERSION from the list because you do not have a supported version running, it is the more important you mention which version you use in the title or prominently in the thread…

Obviously there are still enough OS 13.1 users so it should make sense to allow OS 13.1 instead of OTHER VERSION again !

In fact 13.1 is now Evergreen. And Evergreen is in the list.

And how, exactly, is one even supposed to know that 13.1 is called “evergreen”? I know it as “13.1” and none of the /etc/*-release files says “evergreen”. I’ll see if I can change the thread name.

VERSION=“13.1 (Bottle)”

Anyhow, I have an “upgraded” download speed of 5Mb, as measured by speedtest.net. If that is the issue, then maybe a set of “slow network” repos are needed? If not (or even if so), then maybe some better diagnostics are in order?

There has been a security anouncement (some people think that most people will follow those): https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/513431-security-announce-openSUSE-13-1-has-reached-end-of-SUSE-support-13-1-Evergreen-goes-on

and that points to: https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-security-announce/2016-02/msg00004.html

But you were not accused of not using the item Evergreen fom the list (it might have been fine if you had), but you were accused of choosing OTHER and then not explaining the nature of other.

That list to choose from, was introduced because many people forgot to mention what version of openSUSE they used when starting a thread, resulting in much asking and thus delay in solving problems. It was decided to keep the list restricted to the supported openSUSE versions and to add the OTHER VERSION item for those that still run older versions. Of course we hoped that the fact that they had to use the menu would suggest to them that this is an important ingredient of a question for help and that people that had to revert to OTHER VERSION then not would forget to mention the version prominently in the title or at the top of their thread.

It is probably not clear to you what Evergreen is. Evergreen is not another name for a particular openSUSE version, but it is an openSUSE version that is suppoprted by the Evergreen team after it’s official support ceased. A sort of Long Term Release. Until the anouncement I point to above, openSUSE 11.1 was the Evergreen version. Now 13.1 “went Evergreen”.

Most people here will understand when you say you use 13.1 that it is now gone Evergreen. In any case they will understand that you use 13.1.
Most people will also understand when you say Evergreen, that you mean 13.1.
But most people will not be able to guess you use 131.1 when you say OTHER VERSION without any further explanation.

OK, thanks for the explanation. You are correct, I didn’t think “13.1” was relevant to the issue of update failure. I theorized that one repo would work as another and therefore the problem would be generalizable (not be version specific). I am still having the problem and cannot diagnose the issue, however. Obviously, I can get out on the net. I’m here. I just can’t do an update.

Well, even if you think a problem is version independent, the people trying to help you might not come to that conclusion immediatly. They need as much info as you can provide to be able to hel;p you more efficient.

But let us try to come back to your problem (it seems that gogalthorpe’s suggestion that it is only a temporarily problem witth a mirror was not quite correct, because you still have it) and gather more information then the minimum you provided in your first post here.

You report an error message, but you do not explain what you are doing. It has something to do with “online upfate”, but you forget that many things in Unix/Linux can be done in many ways. Thus please tell what ou are exactly doing in the GUI, or when it is in the CLI, then copy/paste the complete prompt, command, output and next prompt here between CODE tags. In fact I doubt that that message you show is exactly as you see it (including the …).

Please do not forget that we can not look over your shoulders while you are doing things, nor are we clairvoyant. We depent completely on what you report.
