On my work computer I installed Opensuse11.2 in VirtualBox. However online update or installs which are downloaded through YAST2 are not working. I get the message “Failed to download media …” and that’s it. I configured the proxy and when using the test proxy button it tells me that the proxy works OK. If I copy the link from yast into Firefox I get to the site of the repositories without problems only Yast cannot connect. Neither from the GUI nor from the console. I had no problems with Opensuse11.0 and previous versions. WHat is the problem?
Well - if nobody can give me a hint like which config file to check/modify I will be going back to SuSE11.0 where everything worked OK.
Hmmm missed your first post.
Did you install from the Sun Site? Just down load be sure you have gcc and kernel-source. I always use the generic version. Then run the installer.
You do know that 11.0 support ends in about 3-4 months?
Thanks for your reply.
Yes I downloaded and installed VirtualBox from the sun website. Suse11.0 was running OK there. I am considering installing a dual boot system with Windows and SuSE Linux in my classroom (I am a computer teacher) and there I wanted to install the latest system. But with 11.2 I cannot even make an online update after an install - at least on VirtualBox. I tried installing twice with the same results.
gcc was installed, kernel-source not. I installed it but it makes no difference.
If the support for 11.0 ends in a few months - what options have I got if 11.2 does not seem to work? 11.0 is running OK on my home computers with multimedia and skype (with webcam) and everything I need. Now I wanted to test if upgrade to 11.2 will bring me advantages there.

Do you have any Internet access, or is it just updates that fail? If the
former, you probably have either the routing or DNS bugs that affect the
11.2 distribution.
Please post the output of the following:
/sbin/route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf
As I wrote earlier I have internet access (very slow though here). As I said if I copy the link of the repositories into Firefox I get there without problems.
That is why I thought the yast settings I have entered may not be the same as in the config file.
those two files look OK
route shows the correct default gateway and the resolv.conf file lists the dns server.
I have run a MD5 Checksum on the iso file and it is different to the checksum on your website - this might be the problem even though everything else seems to be ok. I will try to download it again even though it takes more than a day.
Some people have reported problems with aria2c which is what zypper uses to download. If you search the forums you will find the setting to turn it off (and revert to wget I think).
thanks, ken_yap, this seems to work but only from commandline. So the online update is running at the moment and hopefully everything works afterwards and we live happily ever after ;).
