I use openSuse 11.4 and my backgammon opponent uses Windows. Is there any software that allows us to play live online without going through an ad-ridden server?
Thanks.

google is your friend here also:
first hit from the search string of:
open source backgammon windows linux
is GNU Backgammon at http://www.gnubg.org/
which works on Linux, Mac and even Windows…

Yes, I had found that page previously. Unfortunately the links are dead, and it doesn’t support a player-to-player connection. Which is why I asked for a personal recommendation, hopefully from someone already using such software.
and here Backgammon GNU Backgammon is some explanation on how to connect to your friends gnubg, or her/him to yours. You could pick a dedicated port and forward it on your router to your local IP.
Many thanks. I’m on my way to installing right now.
The links on this page are working again and I see that there is a Windows version available. The Linux version is more than adequate, but it’s going to take some time to set up a Windows box to connect to. Many thanks.
