One Solution to Wireless problems

Hi,
Submitting this as a new posting in the hope that it may help a few newbies like myself get their new installations on line.
I have been struggling for a few days and finally had success.First I tried with an
atheros pci card from Belkin-no joy. Then
I tried a ralink card from Edimax (a card
with good native support in 11.1),still no joy. Was lucky enough to have Iwfinger respond to my plea for help but apart from helping
establish that my DHCP was failing to work
properly, couldnt really get any further. Then
it occured to me to wipe the hard drive
completely(it was new before I installed 11.1) That done ,I installed from a purchased live
install disc ,rather than the DVD iso I had downloaded and burned; the Gnome network manager asked for the ESSID and wep and away
it went, with a really strong single the
system is very quick and a pleasure to work with. I wonder how many newbie problems not
just with wireless are caused by poor quality
downloads I think there may be quite a few rotfl!

Did you not calculate the md5sum for the download?

Hi,
good to have your imput once more;not sure
I’m familiar with the term md5sum,but I did
attempt to download and burn the ISO three
times ,on the third attempt the resulting DVD
passed the media check-(the other two having
failed with incorrect checksums). It was this
DVD that was installed and appeared to be fine until it came to getting on line, the rest of the story you already know about.I guess the
points I’m trying to make are as follows
(a) Theres nothing much wrong with the programme , if your hardware is ‘known’ to
be compatable and in good order-then the installation should be trouble free.
(b) If problems are encountered then one
solution that worked for me was to
re-install from a 'know to be good’source.

I suspect that there will have been quite a
number of noobies like myself , with issues
caused not by the quality of the programme
but the quality of the installation.

Cheers

One last word on this-

Now found the stickie in the Install/Boot /Login section;
wishing I’d found it earlier, and would reccomend it to any
Newbie like Me who hasn’t already been there.
Its easy to get a ‘good’ copy of the live install CD,but getting
a ‘good’ DVD still eludes me.
