Onboard audio not working on Asus K8U-X

Hi. I switched from Kubuntu to SUSE to check if this is a (K)ubuntu only problem. Seems not to be because sound doesn’t work with SUSE either. Everybody seems have this same problem with this motherboard + Linux (expect that this mobo seemed to work with some older distributions). I Googled and found out that passing the buggy_semaphore 1 option to the driver module should work. It didn’t. Some people got sound output from the microphone jack. I didn’t. I Googled more and more and tried basically everything with Kubuntu. I gave up. Few months later I decided to try again with SUSE and here I am. I have tried the same things with SUSE what I did with Kubuntu with no results.

I appreciate all help.

By the way, could the sounds work with the x86 version? Any ideas? I haven’t tried that because I don’t want to reinstall the system for nothing if audio ceases to work even with the x86 version.

And here’s some output:

xtrakt@adsl-77-109-220-17:~> cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.20.
xtrakt@adsl-77-109-220-17:~> cat /proc/asound/modules

                      ALi M5455 with AD1888 at irq 18

I’ve never encountered anyone with an AD1888 before.

I recommend you write a bug report . There is guidance here: Submitting Bug Reports - openSUSE

Raise the bug report against a 64-bit openSUSE-11.2 on component “sound”. Please run the script:

/usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh --no-upload

and attach the file /tmp/alsa-info.txt created by that script to the bug report.

The bug report will come to the attention of the SuSE-GmbH sound packager who is also an alsa developer, and if there is a problem with alsamixer in saving settings, he is the best person to address it.

Since he is an alsa developer, any fix he comes up with will be passed upstream and benefit all Linux distributions.

Thanks for the info. Done.

Connecting the front panel audio made the sounds work. ****.

Great.

But should not the other jacks also work? Or did you not try them?

Actually the front panel audio does NOT work. My board just won’t output any audio (from the back panel) if the front panel connectors are not connected or if the connectors on the board are not shorted with jumper caps. I got this board for free and the previous owner had the front panel connected so the jumpers were gone.
