When i start a brand new install of Thunderbird i get the following error
Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To use Thunderbird, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, restart your device, or use a different profile
I have a fresh new install Tumbleweed.
I have on my datadrive a thunderbird profile, a copy from my previous tumbleweed
One of the the first applications that I install is Thunderbird
installed with Yast software

In konsole i create a profile with
ger@localhost:~> thunderbird -P
In the konsole I create a new profile, chose my profile directory on the data disk and make that my new profile default.
But when I start thunderbird from the menu I get an error (see beginning of this post
I tried to start thunderbird from the command line in konsole the error is
ger@localhost:~> thunderbird
ATTENTION: default value of option mesa_glthread overridden by environment.
Some a clue what I have to do to get thunderbird running again?
I tried (another) clean Tumbleweed with the flatpak version but with the same bad result
According to the Mozilla bug report shown below, that is not an error - it’s simply informational. The last post shows how to silence that message. That bug was closed without fixing anything (because it’s not a bug).
Thanks for replying,
I was just trying to be complete in testing.
But this was copy paste on clean screen in konsole.
No more messages
The error is when I start thunderbird on the desktop remains (in a window)
Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To use Thunderbird, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, restart your device, or use a different profile
this message remain, even after restarting tumbleweed and starting thunderbird as first application.
When I look in the info center / system monitor /applictions or processes there is no thunderbird.
There is no thunderbird to find
How did you create the old profile backup? Was the profile/Thunderbird closed when you copied it to the datadrive? You might have a backup in an inconsistant state when you copied it when Thunderbird was still running…
Does the profiles.ini match your profiles?
Additionally you should start Thunderbird in safe mode from terminal and test further…
This is a long-shot, but it might work (or might not work).
Open a command-line console (like konsole) and execute the commands that are shown below (I executed these on my machine).
Keep in mind, that some of my sub-directories will have a different name than on your machine
... I am now in my user home sub-directory, and I change to the Thunderbird configuration sub-directory:
username@machine:~> cd ./.thunderbird/
... and here, I am simply showing the various files in that sub-dir:
username@machine:~/.thunderbird> ls -al
total 12
drwx------ 1 username users 228 Nov 30 12:49 .
drwxr-xr-x 1 username users 584 Nov 30 12:48 ..
drwx------ 1 username users 62 Nov 30 12:48 Crash Reports

drwx------ 1 username users 0 Nov 30 12:48 Pending Pings
-rw-r--r-- 1 username users 259 Nov 30 12:48 profiles.ini
... and now, this command, I am looking for any file with the word "lock" in them
username@machine:~/.thunderbird> find . -name *lock* -ls
2123428 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 username users 0 Nov 30 12:57 ./ka6y3ftx.default-release/.parentlock
2123834 4 lrwxrwxrwx 1 username users 16 Nov 30 12:57 ./ka6y3ftx.default-release/lock -> 127.0.0.1:+16566
... and now, I delete the two "lock" files that were found:
username@machine:~/.thunderbird> rm ./ka6y3ftx.default-release/.parentlock
username@machine:~/.thunderbird> rm ./ka6y3ftx.default-release/lock
.... and finally, I check to be sure the "lock" file are gone:
username@machine:~/.thunderbird> find . -name *lock* -ls
username@machine:~/.thunderbird>
