odd USB Mem Behaviour

Hi,

I have lots of USB memory devices and all but one are (un)-mountable from the ‘dophin–places’ window.

The one not recognised by dolphin is a ‘Cruzer micro 8GB’ memory stick with ext3 formatting. Access to this device in dolphin is only possible if first mounted via Konqueror or the plasmoid ‘Device Notifier’.

The recognised devices have either vfat or ntfs formatting.

Any suggestions why the only one with Linux formatting cannot be directly accessed via dolphin? Bug?

PS. This only occurs on a openSUSE 11.3_64bit machine. There is no problem with recognition on 32bit machines.

Not having this here on my _64
But mine are ext4, though that shouldn’t matter

Tried to reproduce, don’t have the issue either.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

I’ll try re-formatting and see if it sorts things out.

On the problem device the partitioning starts at block 1, on all other devices it starts at block 0.

Could this have an effect? Would not think so.

Hi,

Re-formatting worked. Made it ext4.

Excellent - Thanks for letting us know

Hi caf4926,

Some additional information.

1.1 The 32bit machine where the USB memory stick was recognised has a SLED_11_SP1 OS.
1.2 It also was not recognised on a machine with openSUSE11.3_32bit.

2.1 Dolphin could not recognise the USB memory stick until mounted by plasmoid ‘Device Notifier’ or ‘sysinfo:/’ in Konqueror.
2.2 The contents of the USB memory stick could only be seen if accessed via the /media/ directory in dolphin. At which time it then became visable in the ‘dolphin–places’ window.
2.3. Dismounting in dolphin was impossible because,
– if it was visible in a window pane it was identified as busy,
– if it was not visible in a window pane it was not shown in ‘dolphin–places’.

It’s possible that the memory stick is dying but only time will tell.

Do you also have gnome installed?
It’s possible that some crossover is happening and Nautilus is taking hold of the device also

No Nautilus installed. Only the minimum gnome files installed for dependency reason; firefox, libreoffice, etc.

kde is regularly updated, status today 4.5.4-2.5.
