I had opensuse 11.1 installed on disk sdd runing without problems. Last week I decided to install OS 11.2 on the same disk, so I downloaded and burned the new file. I first ran the media check and the result was OK, then I proceeded and installed the new OS with the KDE environment, the one I have always used.
When the installation finished, it did not reboot, I waited about 5 minutes and then I used the reboot button and the system rebooted, continued with the first installation configuaration etc.
When I try to log into my account I get the message “kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 1.
check”
I can log in as root, I went into the old forum messages and tried what is recommended there, like running kstartupconfig4, and no output.
I tried one more time, this time I got the message "Call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?) Check your installation.
Amazing, a new Installation and tmp is full !!!
Now I decided something different, I used The same DVD and reinstalled this new 11.2 but I decided to change to gnome (just to see how it is implemented in Open SUSE) this time the system rebooted by itself and finished the installation and I am able to log in as user or root.
I did not like the look of gnome so I decided to go back and reinstall OS 11.2 with my preferred KDE. and again, it did not reboot, and when I use the computer reboot button it proceeds and created the first configuration…etc, but again It does not allow me to log is as user, just as root.:shame:
I really believe The KDE is broken somewhere.
Any hints, recommendations are wellcome (except using the gnome environment, just do not like it)
Thank you for reading my post and good luck to all
From your gnome login do this:
Delete the hidden user folder .kde4 and or .kde or rename them to -old
Use Yast Software Management filter by Patterns
Right click the kde4-Desktop and kde4-Base and select ‘Install’
If you do one the other may auto mark up
Then on each of those (Desktop and Base), go to the menu along the top of the screen ‘Package’ and select ‘All in this list - Update Unconditionally’
Now accept
See if that helps
Thank a lot for your reply, since your recommendation involved reinstalling the OS 11.2 with the gnome desktop etc, I actually did not follow it, What I did is downloading the Live CD (KDE) and used it to install the new version of OpenSUSE. The installer worked ok, when it finished copying the files, it adviced me to remove the disk, then it rebooted and continued with the automatic configuration and I am able to log into my account.
I really do not know what went wrong with the DVD, but the media check reported no errors etc…
Any way I thank you for trying to help me
Good luck to all
