Odd behavioron Suse 12.3

Just installed 12.3 (clean install) and I had these 2 things happening:

1- during installation, when you have to reset to continue installation: when booting and selecting Suse/default to continue the instalation, teh screen went black with no activity… after waiting for some minutes I reset again in safe mode where I was told the installation is incomplete and finished in text mode.

2- Sometimes, while booting, screen goes black and stays that way, I turn off/on the pc and then it boots normally…

Do I have to adjust something ?

OS version: Linux 3.7.10-1.16-default
KDE: 4.10.5 “release 1”

P4 2.8 Ghz, 2 GB RAM
GPU: Radeon HD 4670 1 GB (AGP)

3d accelerator: unknown
Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV730
OpenGL/ES extension 3.0 Mesa 9.0.2
Kernel module radeon

Try booting to safe mode. (in the advanced in grub).

Did it work?

If so you probably need to install the ATI/AMD propritary driver.

but which is better… so far I have good performance.

Sometimes works sometime does not seem more like a hardware problem

You will get better 3D with the propritary driver but the OS driver is probably fine for 2D

to be sure we are on the same page is there any mods like over clocking you have done that can cause odd problem because of timing.

Also a weak memory address may be a problem try running the mem test on the install media over night

no, no overcloaking anything… I get good 3d performance, I feel the scrolling of web pages a bit slow. Only the occasional black screen while loading.

My Radeon is a HIS HD 4670… noisy but good.

Well if it were me I’d try the propritary driver and see if that helped the problem.

Unfortunately that’s not possible.
The HD4670 is only supported by the legacy driver, which doesn’t work on 12.3…

ok… guess I better not touch the drivers
