nvidia issues, now resolved?

Until yesterday I was using opensuse 13.2. I did a zypper update, and one of the updates was a new nvidia driver (GeForce 8400M GS). Afterwards X would not start. After trying many things I decided to kill two birds with one stone and install 42.1. At first I stayed with the nouveau driver but the system crashed severely several times, for example just visiting http://www.google.com/chrome with chromium caused the system to reboot. So I installed the nvidia driver again and now all seems well.

Has anyone else had trouble? What are your thoughts?

I should mention I am using a Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop. And XFCE4.

I’ve had much trouble with nouveau and Plasma-5 but there has been slow
improvement. Plasma 5.7.5 seemed OK for a while but I found that
applications would fail to start when system had been running for a day
or two.

I’ve been using 13.2 and KDE4 until now because of the troubles but I’ve
been running on 42.1 with 5.8-beta since it was released and I’ve had no
trouble - SO FAR. Having said that, the cure is probably down to me
using Qt 5.7 as the failure of applications to start reared its ugly
head again when I tried 42.2-beta2 which is only on Qt 5.6.1.

Although 42.1 worked with nVidia drivers, I’d had the occasional
problem with them in the past and had to switch to nouveau. The idea of
running on 42.1 with the only functioning driver being nVidia ensured
that I stayed with 13.2 and KDE4.

openSUSE 42.1; KDE Plasma 5.7.95; Qt 5.7.0; AMD Phenom II X2 550
Processor; Kernel: 4.7.3; Video: nVidia GeForce 210 (Driver: nouveau);
Sound: ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

Do you have virtual box installed? I read elsewhere that one of its components can cause problems.

I tried using xfailsafe but applications didn’t work, i.e. firefox, yast etc all failed with an error.
