Nvidia graphics problems

I use an Nvidia GeForce 630 video card with OpenSuse 13.1. Using the 31.1 package the software installs without problem and basic functionality works. However, seemingly randomly, screen update behaves oddly. Parts of the screen are continuously redrawn until focus moves elsewhere or parts of the screen are redrawn incorrectly. This doesn’t happen all the time, but is especially evident with apps that draw complicated presentations, e.g. web browser.

Any suggestions about what might be the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

J. Morris

Laptop or desktop, and is Geforce 630 correct could it be 630m?
Anyway, what’s the output of this:

/sbin/lspci | egrep 'VGA|3D'

desktop

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 630] (rev a1)

Check your NVIDIA packages in Yast be sure that they match ie all are 03 and the kernel name matches your kernel. in Most cases it is desktop. There as been a bit of a problem sometimes with mixed packages being installed. If you see that fix be removing incorrect packages I have seen it here and others have reported it but not everyone sees the problem. BTW I run a 630 card also without problems but I do take special care that things are correct on updates.

Here is the list from zypper of the installed files from the repository:

zypper se ‘nvidia’

Your problem is clear, you have parts of all 3 different drivers, plus the pae, default, & desktop drivers.

Remove them all, then re-install the G03 and only the G03 packages, but also install only the G03 that matches your kernel (ie: default, pae, or desktop).

The listing in unclear (for which I apologize). Only 4 packages are installed: the ones with an ‘i’ in column 1.
They are all 03 and desktop packages.

oops, yeah, didn’t notice that, distracted at the time and for some silly reason thought those were all installed.:shame:

But, that confusion would have been avoided if you had posted the output in code tags.

You do that by, in the message editor, clicking on the “#” icon on the editor’s menu.

Gotta run right now, but I will look back in here ASAP. However, I bet gogalthorp or Wolfi get here and help you find the solution before I do.

Which Desktop?

If KDE did you check the KDE settings?

configure desktop - desktop effects - advanced option

should be set to OpenGL 3.1 and Raster

See if that helps

If gnome or some other desktop we need to look further

The desktop is gnome.

Check that the card is properly seated in the slot. Perhaps pull it out, clean the contacts and the slot, then reseat it and make sure it is in solid.

Fan on the card? Make sure it is clean, fins are not clogged, and that it is running at full speed.

Check connections from the card to the monitor. Also, is the monitor healthy?

Are you somewhere where there is a bit of a heatwave going on right now?

Could your machine be running a bit hot, but not hot enough yet to lock up?
