nvidia graphics drivers, which to use??

I did a new install of suse 11.4, recently.
I added the nvidia repository after the install.

System has a GeForce 9600GT graphics card.
Yast tells me that the following Nvidia drivers are installed.

  • nvidia-computeG02
  • nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop
  • x11 video-nvidiaG02
  • xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveu

openSuse WIKI tells me

For all NVIDIA current cards (Geforce 6 and newer), install: x11-video-nvidiaG02, nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-KERNEL

In 11.2 the boot messages would refer to nvidia modules being loaded… Boot messages in 11.4 log make no reference to any nvidia modules.

I’m thinking something is amiss here.

I’m thinking of removing:

  • nvidia-computeG02
  • xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveu

and installing

  • x11-video-nvidiaG02
  • nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-KERNEL

Can anyone give me some guidance. Am I going to create a problem? Is it only a matter of removing and installing?

Thanx

It looks ok to me

Post the output of

/sbin/lspci -nnk

Question: what makes you think the driver is not loaded.
Explanation: in 11.4 you saw the complete loading of modules. In 11.4 you will only see: " configuring devices ".

Driver is installed. Whether it’s being used:

Start Konqueror, enter " sysinfo:/ " in the address bar. It should tell you the NVIDIA driver is in use, not nouveau or nv or else.

I see ‘nvidia’ drivers as being loaded.

The reason I raised the question is because I can’t find a way to change the monitor refresh rate. In 11.2 I could change it to e.g vert-70hz now it is fixed at vert-59.1hz.

My thinking was ‘maybe the wrong drivers are installed’. Then I read some of the problems folks are having with the ‘nouveu’ driver. …and then one thing led to another. …and therefore the question.

No
kde typically reports incorrectly

suse 11.4 install and invalid screen settings](http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/install-boot-login/458702-suse-11-4-install-invalid-screen-settings.html)

Where are you getting the reading 59.1 ?

The ‘nvidia-settings’ utility should report the settings correctly, and allow you to change them if necessary.

Further to this, I believe one can type

nvidia-settings -q RefreshRate

to query the refresh rate on attached display devices if using the nvidia driver.

Check out man nvidia-settings for more options.

my post was to ‘finish’ the thread.
i was able to find another post that dealt with the same problem and i referenced it for any other ‘perplexed penquins’ out there.
the solution was to un-comment 2 lines in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50.monitor.conf.

HorizSync 28-85
VertRefresh 50-100

doing this gave me a selection to choose from when using the NVIDIA X Server Settings app. i can now change screen resolution and VertRefresh.

thanks for all your input.

In that case, your issue was with problematic EDID. Manual tweaking is sometimes needed to overcome this. Thanks for the update.
