nvidia graphics card (again) and leap 15

I have failed upgrades from 42.3 (dual boot with windows 10) by online method, dvd upgrade method, and dvd clean installation method. Often I end up with a black screen and a large blinking cursor at the upper left and no key does anything. After two weeks seeking solutions, where I have filed some previous requests for help, I have my system back on 42.3/win10 and working perfectly and completely updated.

I have an nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card that is working well on 42.3 with nvidia G04 drivers. I believe my upgrade problems on all the methods are related to the nvidia card from other posts I have seen. There is an info page talking about installing nvidia drivers from leap 15 but I can’t get there to be able to apply it.

I need a specific list of nvidia related steps/things to do “PRIOR” to the upgrade to leap 15. I would like info related to:

  1. Online update method, e.g., should I change the nvidia repo to point to leap 15 along with the OSS and NonOSS repos?
  2. DVD Upgrade method, e.g., should I change some nvidia related things while in 42.3 prior to the upgrade or adjust some boot parameters (nomodeset) or add some repos?
  3. DVD Installation method, e.g., should I change some nvidia related things while in 42.3 prior to the upgrade or adjust some boot parameters(nomodeset) or add some repos?

I need specific steps that have a high probability of working. I do calculational things, not much system administration and don’t know the boot process well. Else, I’ll be running 42.3 for a quite longer time.

How I would handle this:

-upgrade to Leap 15
-install Nvidia proprietary drivers

It sounds like you’ve got the upgrade process figured out, you just need the instructions for installing the Nvidia drivers.

  1. After the upgrade, switch to a different virtual console (ctrl-alt-f4) and you’ll have a login prompt. Login as root.
  2. Use the text based YaST to add the Nvidia repository (“yast repositories”).
  3. Then install the Nvidia drivers (“zypper in nvidia-gfxG04-kmp-default”).
  4. Reboot and you should be good to go.
