Nvidia graphics adapter fan is running at maximum after 13.2 upgrade

openSUSE v13.2
nvidia geforce gt440
nouveau video driver

After upgrading from 13.1 to 13.2, during boot-up when the graphics adapter is switched to a non-default mode, the cooling fan is set to maximum speed. It is both unnecessary (has not been for years), and unpleasantly loud.

Is there some way to control the fan speed?

And, yes, I saw the other thread about this. It applied to the nvidia driver, not the nouveau. I did not read anything that could be applied to this case; I may be wrong.

Have a read here ‘The fan is really LOUD all the time. How do I make it more quiet?’;
