Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS - blanks screen

Hi

I’ve just about managed are several tries to get my Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS to be recognised by OpenSuse 11.0, but every so often, it blanks the computer screen, and I have to restart the computer. It seems to happen at the oddest times, even if the computer is inactive for a while with Firefox open.

Can you help?

Can you post a copy of your xorg.conf file?

It’s located at /etc/X11/xorg.conf

This is the Xorg.conf.

Tried disabling the Composite option at bottom, but still has the same effect.

Running a dual-core AMD processor. Read somewhere about this might be a problem as well, but not sure where I read it now.

Thanks

Hmm, you’re missing some options in your xorg.conf file. Not sure if that’s the actual cause but you’ll need to run these commands in a terminal:

su

enter root password

nvidia-xconfig --render-accel
nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals -d 24

(all one line)

log out, then log back in and see if that helps.

If not, after about a half hour of research, I’ve also seen that using a different monitor may help.

Looking at your xorg.conf file it looks like your monitor isn’t detected right as it’s using the generic VESA.

Go into Yast and under the Hardware section click Graphics Card and Monitor. If Sax2 doesn’t detect your monitor try choosing it manually then click ok and save changes.

If this doesn’t help then, as I said before, try a different monitor.

Hope this helps!
