NVidia GeForce 8500 GT & Samsung SyncMaster 2253nw

Well, first of all I want to say I’m quite newbie with openSUSE. I’ve just installed a 10.3 version and everything seems all right except for a tiny issue with my monitor size… :S

I have a graphic card NVidia GeForce 8500 GT and a monitor Samsun SyncMaster 2253nw 1600x1050 16/10 aspect ratio. The system did guess the graphic card but missed the monitor.

First, when I go to Configure Desktop… > Display > Size & Orientation the tab shows a message of “Your X server is using the RandR extension at version 1.2 or greater which doesn’t have any configuration yet.

Then, when I start the YaST2 Control Center > Graphic Card and Monitor I get a message of:
3D acceleration nos supported
SaX2 cannot offer activation of the 3D subsystem because your graphics card/driver doesn’t support 3D
.”

I tried all possible configurations for the monitor:

  • Samsung Syncmaster 226bw
  • VESA (the default)
  • LCD 1600 x 1050

And whenever I press OK and try to test the configuration it keeps showing a desktop wider than my monitor, I cannot see both sides of it. And the command buttons to move or resize the desktop don’t work, they do not perform any action at all. The window says on its bottom:
Screen [0] 1680 x 1050 @ 65Khz : 60hz.

I’m quite lost regarding this issue I would appreciate if some one could help me.

thanx…

So did you install the nvidia driver?

I do recall when I was on 10.3 the manual install was needed rather than the repo’s (I have 8500GT too)

But that is not to say it will not work from the repo for you. Just keep it in mind.

The repos can be picked up from here complete with directions:
NVIDIA - openSUSE

I know 10.3 and this is how it works:
Start Yast - Configure repositories
Click Add and tick the Community… one, Next
tick the NVidia repo, Next, OK
When asked to accept a key, accept it.
Now start the software installer.
It should automatically select the driver and X-related files for you.
Install them, and logout.
In the login screen hit Ctrl-Alt-F1
login with username and password
type: su -c ‘init 3’
Enter rootpassword when asked for
type: su -c ‘sax2 -r -m0=nvidia’
Enter rootpassword when asked for
Pick Change configuration
In the properties of the now recognized card tick NoLogo and RenderAccel
Save and exit.
type: su -c ‘init 5 && exit’
Enter rootpassword when asked for
Now you’re back in the login screen. 3D acceleration is now enabled and trouble should have disappeared.

Good luck

Just the same, IME to get 1680 x 1050 or 1920 x 1200 you had to use
the proprietary drivers. The open source drivers just would not do
it.

I’ve always had the best luck with compiling the drivers for my system - NVidia is very *nix friendly - go to their website and download the drivers. I wrote a step-by-step in this thread:
11.1 dual monitors, one video card - openSUSE Forums

ATI drivers are about the same…
