NVIDIA FAILS....

Hello,
I searched the whole internet to configure my nvidia driver (installed using YAST) but I couldn’t run the KDE desktop on my Laptop after configuring the driver. the graphics is GEFORCE GT 635M- and my Laptop: Asus N56VJ-DH71
at first, I blacklisted nouevau, and I blocked the Intel drivers to load at the startup. Then I opened the terminal and entered: nvidia-xconfig. I hadn’t any xorg.conf in my computer, so it made a new one for me. by restarting the computer, only black screen comes up. and by pressing ctrl+shift+f1 and entering to console login, I entered the command statrx, and this is the result of the log file:

Actually, I’m not using Bumblewee driver. I’m using the Nvidia proprietary Driver…

Sorry, I thought you were using Hybrid Graphics?

Have you successfully installed nvidia before?

That’s a resounding NO from me!! … and before i go on a ‘trial-n-error’ rampage … something tells me i might be pushing it trying to find a linux driver for my ‘NVIDIA Corporation GF116 [GeForce GTS 450]’ card, because of the listing at this site under the ‘Supported Products’ tab …

… anyone had any luck with the GeForce GTS 450 card?? :\

EDIT: Disregard … my ‘domestic blindness’ has come online with me!!!

GeForce 400 series:
GTX 480, GTX 470, GTX 465, GTX 460, GTS 450

Is this not you?

I have a GTS450 see my sig

Yes! … that is me :shame: … and after i put on my glasses i thought “beudy … this should be a breeze!”

I chose the zypper method and it appeared everything went smoothly … but when i rebooted i get this:

and when i try to perhaps change the settings … all i can get throught the GUI is this …

which doesn’t give much joy …

… any suggestions???

Thanks caf!!

That’s kde

Maybe you have something mixed up with the sessions ans window manager

Did you install gnome or kde first?

gnome first, from installation disk … and it was that way for a week or so as i struggled with installing brother print/scan via network … media server … LAMP … etc. Then had to come to these forums for something and realized KDE was the preferred GUI … so installed that via YaST pattern. So do not have a lot of experience with KDE … but must say after all this is sorted i will be spending more time there … as am quietly impressed!! The other GUI session i really like is iceWM!! … so simple and quick!! So all in all i am really impressed with this OS Distro … and am determined to make it all work!!

As far a nVidia is concerned … i simply followed the zypper instructions … nothing too difficult … but as you can see the result is less that hoped for.

And YES … the nVidia config window was loaded under KDE as i switched sessions after getting the “Gnome 3 Failed to Load” error just to see if the nVidia driver was working under that session. So no … dont think there is a prob with the installation … however, i have always has a nagging question as to whether it is okay to have both KDE and Gnome installed in parallel??

Anyway …here is an lspci dump if that helps at all??

@griadooss:
Please post the output of:

rpm -qa | grep kernel
rpm -qa | grep nvidia

And on a fresh 12.3 installation you have to add your user to the “video” group for the nvidia driver to work correctly.
See: https://www.suse.com/releasenotes/i386/openSUSE/12.3/RELEASE-NOTES.en.html#idm1265054156
This has been fixed via online updates in the meantime. Have you installed all updates? Especially this one:

rpm -q systemd

To see, if your nvidia driver is working properly, install the package “Mesa-demo-x” and run:

glxinfo | grep render

This should print (among other stuff): “direct rendering: Yes”. And the “OpenGL renderer string” should contain something with “NVIDIA”.

@mohamad_kav:
You don’t need to run nvidia-xconfig or create an xorg.conf. The nvidia driver is automatically used if installed.
An xorg.conf can even cause problems because it overrides Xorg’s auto-configuration. So better remove it.

BUT: AFAIK, on a hybrid system the normal proprietary NVIDIA driver doesn’t work.
You HAVE to use Bumblebee… (well, maybe not if you can switch off the intel graphics in the BIOS)

Check the settings here

and

Those are my settings in kde

That’s for setting up kdm as login manager and KDE as standard session.

But that won’t fix his nvidia problem.

Well, in the meantime I looked at your lspci output (missed that earlier, sorry), and the nvidia kernel module seems to be in use.
So that check should be unnecessary.

I think you just have that permissions problem, i.e. direct rendering is not possible.

That’s for setting up kdm as login manager and KDE as standard session.

But that won’t fix his nvidia problem.
If you look he was loading a kde session and getting a gnome fallback notification

I was just hazarding a guess at possible solutions/causes etc…

No he wasn’t. See here:

And I missed that last question…
Yes, it is ok to have as many Desktop Environments installed as you like (provided you have enough disk space of course… ).
And it is also possible to run KDE programs under GNOME and vice versa.

rpm -qa | grep kernel:

kernel-desktop-devel-3.7.10-1.16.1.x86_64kernel-desktop-3.7.10-1.16.1.x86_64
kernel-firmware-20130114git-1.2.1.noarch
kernel-devel-3.7.10-1.16.1.noarch
kernel-desktop-3.7.10-1.1.1.x86_64

rpm -qa | grep nvidia:

x11-video-nvidia-96.43.23-20.1.x86_64
nvidia-gfx-kmp-desktop-96.43.23_k3.7.10_1.1-19.1.x86_64

And on a fresh 12.3 installation you have to add your user to the “video” group for the nvidia driver to work correctly.

griadooss : users video

Have you installed all updates? Especially this one:

rpm -q systemd
systemd-195-13.29.1.x86_64

To see, if your nvidia driver is working properly, install the package “Mesa-demo-x” and run:

glxinfo | grep render

This should print (among other stuff): “direct rendering: Yes”. And the “OpenGL renderer string” should contain something with “NVIDIA”
.

Soooo … looks like the driver eh??? Maybe is should step back and re-install it again??

Thnx wolf!

You installed the wrong driver! This one is for 11 year old GeForce 4 cards.

Do the following:

sudo zypper rm x11-video-nvidia nvidia-gfx-kmp-desktop
sudo zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG03 nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop nvidia-computeG03

Then reboot and it should work (check with “glxinfo | grep render”).

Hmmm … okay … but according to nVidia:

**GeForce 400 series:
GTX 480, GTX 470, GTX 465, GTX 460, GTS 450
**

and the zypper installation instructions at SDB:NVIDIA say:

for GeForce 4xx/4xxx or older: <<<< Does this not mean this? >>>> **GeForce 400 series:
**do this:
zypper install x11-video-nvidia

which is what i did … so somehow i have mis-interpreted the instructions!

nvm … I have already gone back to the previous image and will do the following:

sudo zypper rm x11-video-nvidia nvidia-gfx-kmp-desktop
sudo zypper in x11-video-nvidiaG03 nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop nvidia-computeG03

and reboot as you suggest, and it should work!!!

… back soon lol!

I just noticed that you seemed to have run glxinfo as root (because of the red prompt in your picture  ).
Don’t do that! It has to work as user, your user has to use direct rendering.
Also if you run it as root in your user’s session, it normally doesn’t have access to the display anyway.

Okay … this looks more like it …

direct rendering: YesOpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on NVCF
    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_AMD_conservative_depth,

But i should carry on as suggested??
