Nvidia drivers installed but not working after migration to Leap 16

I was referring to the Leap 15.6 repo (#4). In any case, the NVIDIA repo should be disabled/removed as well. It can’t be used with your old graphics hardware.

Next question is,
Can I ‘migrate’ back to leap 15.6? And live with it after EOL if I haven’t updated the nvidia card.

You could attempt a downgrade by reverting to the Leap 15.6 repos before running zypper dup, but in no way guaranteed IMO. A clean install would be better.

thanks again

maybe uninstalling the driers and reinstalling them will help(I have doubts).

All will say is I won’t live with the scrunched graphic screens and desktop icons that take up nearly the whole screen.

Windows works still, and I can look at other distros that are ‘windows friendly’.

Am truly disappointed that the migration tool (poor choice of upgrade method I guess) didn’t do all that I read about in the past months.

Thanks for all your responses!

Not for the graphics card reported by inxi. It is too old.

Re-installed leap 15.6. It detected hardware & included the Nvidia graphics.
If I do a ‘fresh’ install of leap 16.0 (using agama I assume), will it also auto detect the graphics hardware & add the kernel module(s)?

On Leap 16, the nouveau driver will be your only option for this older graphics hardware.

I found this somewhere on the internet and it did the trick for me:

systemctl enable display-manager-legacy.service
systemctl start display-manager-legacy.service

Thanks, but as stated in a recent post above, I put leap 15.6 back in & will live with it to EOL & maybe beyond.

So you don’t care about the safety of your data?

Not upgrading your system after it is EOL is no solution. Why not trying the recommendation to test nouveau?
You only have this graphic issues as you did not remove the no longer working Leap 15.6 Nvidia packages and let nouveau take over.

What recommendation to test nouveau?
The one by @linuxoidoz?

I didn’t leave 16 installed. I have time to think about doing the upgrade again.

That has nothing to do with the OP’s graphics driver situation .

I am willing to look at that ‘recommendation’! Where is it recommended in this thread of posts?

I inferred it at post #20, post #22, and post #27.

So, I am ‘following’ up on those recommendations. 15.6 back in & working. Looking for a new gpu card(that I can afford). Then figure out how this old arthritic body will get it in. ‘ uff said!

Any recommendations for an updated NVIDIA graphic card, or alternatives that will solve my graphic problem in Leap 16?
raedeon, Intel, other??

I have looked at many NVIDIA & can’t decipher what is what, to replace the current card that uses the G05 NVIDIA drivers.

TIA

@Bill_L A Quadro P400 or Quadro T400, both use the G06 driver, I have both running on Leap 16.0.

I’d suggest an Intel A310 if need light graphics as Mesa is still a bit behind the times…

You will need a Mini DP to DP adapter or cable for those cards… or MiniDP to HDMI cable depends on your monitor setup.

Unfortunately my monitor is an old dell VGA.
Depending on the card, I may have to get a conversion cable or update the monitor, which I can’t afford at this time with gettin a new card.

@Bill_L If you get a P400 off eBay (HP/Nvidia Quadro P400 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card. HP 919985-002. High profile bracket ~US$30.00) and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (Amazon ~US$10.00) then you can use the existing monitor?
