Nvidia drivers...HELP!!!

I just installed 11.1, and i am trying to install the nvidia drivers from the 1-click install. I have an Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT. But when i install and reboot, i go to runlevel 3 and i am forced to go to the default driver “vesa”. Please help because i am afraid if i dig too deep i will end up doing something i will regret.

Regards

Try adding the repo Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE
Then adding it with yast > software
You can also read more here NVIDIA - openSUSE

It seems X11 does not like nvidia driver you installed.
to restore runlevel 5 just run ‘yast’ from runlevel 3
and uninstall the nvidia driver.
You should, before to uninstall nvidia driver, see what is the error
that nvidia driver generated. You should see it when it stop at runlevel
3 turning the consolle number 8 ( alt + F8 )
Maybe someone else can help you to decode the errors

sorry “alt + F7”

so this is what i did:

ctrl+alt+F1
signed in as root
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia (I wanted to see what error messages would come up)

This is what came up:

xc: sorry could not start configuration server
xc: for details refer to the log file:
/var/log/sax.log
xc. abort

ctrl-alt-F7

now still using vesa

Did you try what i suggested using the repo and yast?

I’m new to this, so you will have to give me a step by step on what you suggested, sorry.

OK

  1. Right click on the green update applet by the clock and choose add/remove update sources. Enter root pass.
  2. Click add then next
  3. In the name field write Nvidia and in the url enter http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.1/
  4. Click next then OK answer yes (import) to the import question
  5. Now go to yast > software .
  6. You can do this by clicking on the on kicker (start button) and enter software in the field at the top then choose Install software
  7. Type nvidia in the search field and choose nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default
it will automatically add x11-video-nvidiaG02 1. Click accept and reboot
  8. If it stops at runlevel 3 type root then root pass then nvidia-xconfig
(probably won’t need to do this)
