Just as a follow up. I decided to update the latest proprietary nvidia drivers today and everything seems to be working OK.
Since the versions seem to be the same as with the non-working drivers I experienced, I wonder what might have resolved this. 
Hi, thanks for this post. I had a similar problem after the latest kernel and nvidia drivers update on my Leap 15.6. Low screen resolution, nvidia driver not working. Downgrading the driver using Yast worked well, thanks for the accurate description.
