Nvidia driver seem to freeze screen (not the system!)

Hi everybody,

I just installed nvidia driver for my opensuse 11.1. Yast tells me that I have a GeForce 7300 LE graphics card. My system is x64 AMD Athlon based.

Well, when the nvidia driver is activated my system seems to freeze randomly, and I only can manually reboot the system by turning the power of my computer off. I cannot access to text mode, keyboard seems not to respond. But it seems that the system continues to work (if there are some programs running).

Currently I do have 3D acceleration deactivated. And I do not know how to correctly activate it…

Thanks,

Luis

Are you using the nvidia proprietary driver
should be starting: G02-180.

rather than: G02-173.

Can you post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?
and the output of following commands in a terminal window
glxinfo | grep direct (as user)
rpm -qa | grep nvidia (as user)
su -c ‘lsmod | grep nvidia’ (enter rootpassword)
su -c lspci (enter rootpassword)

Question: did you do this? From the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1)
login as user
su -c ‘init 3’
su -c ‘sax2 -r -m0=nvidia’
change configuration
select RenderAccel and NoLogo from NVidia options
select Monitor, or VESA or LCD with right resolution and refreshrate)
check settings
save and exit

If you did not, do it and you will have 3D accelleration
Should work, but I know there can be trouble with these onboard GPU’s.

I had one of these as a pci-e card in this 64bit machine when I first
installed while waiting for my newer one and it worked fine with older
drivers from the Nvidia site, just before I replaced with a much better ATI
card I did notice with one of the newer drivers it had probs but do not
recall which version sorry.

Hi everybody!

I just activated the 3D acceleration as you told me in the previous post. Currently the system does not seem to freeze… hopefully!

Here are the output of the commands you ask me about (just in case you see anything!).

Thanks a lot!

That’s all!

Thanks a lot for your help! At the moment the systems still has not freezed!

Best,

Luis

Dear all,

Bad news… my screen has freezed…

I had my nvidia card activated (3D acceleration) without the desktop effects. I just was running a VTK based application written by myself (it runs smoothly on i386 based systems) and after a few seconds the screen freezed. The only way I had to get of out that is rebooting the system.

I installed VTK from the Science repository, is this correct ? I found it on other repositories (Factory, etc.) but I thought that this was the best one. But I do knot think this may be a problem, since I do run the application as normal user.

rpm -q vtk

advanced algorithms (e.g., surface reconstruction, implicit modelling,
decimation) and rendering techniques (e.g., hardware-accelerated
volume rendering, LOD control)

Do you have any ideas ?

Thanks,

Luis

Hi,

It’s again me! I just installed the VTK testing programs and they all run well. These programs generate 3D figures and I’m able to rotate them with the mouse without problems. So I assume that the problem is somehow in my code…

Best,

Luis

Hi everybody,

Yesterday I found that the problem in my code was the VTK libraries against which I link them. I use ccmake to automatically generate the Makefiles for the code, and it seems that this was the problem. If I compile and link manually the code the program runs perfect!

Well, there is another strange thing. After all the problems I had yesterday (with screen freeze due to the “bad” linked code) I found that this moorning my screen was freezing randomly, mainly when I was scrolling fastly an internet web page. I had to reboot several times and the screen always freezed again.

I confirm that I had 3D accerlation activated, and that the output of the lsmod, glxinfo, and contents of /etc/X11/Xorg.conf was the one that I posted a few days ago.

After all this problems I reconfigured X with “init 3” and “sax2 -r -m0=nvidia” again… and now all is ok! Any ideas of what may happening ?

Thanks!

Luis

Hi again!

Sorry to disturb, but it seems that even with the previous reconfiguration of X (‘init 3’ and ‘sax -r -m0=nvidia’ and selecting RenderAccel and NoLogo) the screen freezes quite often.

It seems that the freezing happens mostly (but not always) when I surf internet with Firefox and I scroll very fast the page up and down. With other applications, such as evince (I scroll fast a PDF up and down) this does not happen.

Currently I do have 3D deactivated since the freezing is very annoying…

Best,

Luis

Hi,

I have tried again to activate the nvidia driver for 3D acceleration (but I do not activate 3D desktop effects). I attach you the Xorg.0.log file where you can see what happens after the freeze. Take into account that I had to cut the log file since it is too long for begin posted in the forum (limit is 15000 caracters). I just indicate in the log where I cut the text.

Note at the end the “infinite loop” message. Hope this helps you figure out what is happening…

Best,

Luis

Try a manuall install of an older driver like this
Someone recommended it earlier, did you try?
Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T)

Poor you. With 3D effects enabled this ( EQ overflowing bla) happens to me all the time. Without effects everything runs fine. I use KDE 4.2.4 on openSUSE 11.1 64-bit.
At least we are not alone with our problem and if you wish you can still use the old driver caf recommended. 180.* graphical corruption and freezes system - nV News Forums :frowning:

Thanks a lot!

I’ll try to compile and install the old driver, and tell you what happened…

Best,

Luis

Hi,

I tried to compile the NVIDIA driver (using the instruccions of NVIDIA/The hard way - openSUSE). I install kernel-source and kernel-syms, but the nvidia driver failed to install. Here is the log (I just mark in bold the errors output by the compiler)

My kernel version is 2.6.27.23-0.1.1.

Any ideas ?

Best,

Luis

Hi. Looks like the kernel-headers are missing. Just install them and try again. Good luck!

Dear all,

Thanks a lot for all your help! I just installed the latest version of the nvidia driver, available in the nvidia repository, and now the random freeze problems disappeared. The version I installed is: 185.18.14-2.2.

Best, lol!
