NVIDIA driver problem

Graphics card: lspci gives => VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2).
Motherboard: AMD processor based

Installed the nvidia driver (1 click link, easy option ha ha) on my openSUSE 11.2 installation and the X server no longer starts, at least I am assuming that is the case since I no longer have a graphical desk top. I found a potential solution at this link:

NVIDIA/Troubleshooting - openSUSE

Does anybody have any idea what configuration file is being referred to in this link?

Is it possible to wind-back the nvidia driver installation from the command line in a nice clean manner?

Any other advice/ideas will be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I think it is the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. If you don’t have any such file you can create it by using the nvidia-xcofig. Someone should really edit that wiki part and clear things up.

The problem with the older nvidia gf cards is with the kernel or the new version of the X server.
(I don’t know the exact problem)
the solution is simple:
add “nopat” to the kernel boot options!
without quotas

you can do it before booting or tweak grub via yast and add “nopat” to the boot options
OK this is for use with nvidia’s propitiatory drivers not for the nv or vesa ones
hope this helps

you may need to re-compile the nvida kernel. I used to run a desktop with Nvidia card and had to re-compile my kernel with ever kernel update. there’s a tool that will do this for you but I can’t remember it off the top of my head.
