NVidia driver makes OpenSuse not able to login

I have a fresh install of opensuse. Direct after that I upgraded all packages with all repositories as known on this site.
In the mean time I started the system with the line “nomodeset”, coz it loaded the nouveau driver -> and crashed.

At last I tried to install the Nvidia driver (My SuSe experience is stopped only +1 year ago in opensuse 11._).
As said booted to SuSe

  • init 3
  • Blacklist bouveau
  • Deinstall nouveau
  • dks disabled
  • install as described -> No errors
  • init 5

And then it asks me to auto login, which I say is OK -> result it comes with the regular login screen.
So I type my pass and try again, the screen flickers a couple of times but in the end it returns to the login.

Tried it with a xorg.conf and without -> same result.
Tried it with an HDMI TV and a D-Sub LCD -> same result.

Tried my old xorg.conf -> backed it up once -> same result

Checked xorg log and messages and localmessages -> no clearly defined errors

So I have no idea where to look know, furthermore I have no idea what I further need to tell here. So any help is much appreciated!
This is not a warm welcome

Thank you all in advance.

Make sure your default Desktop is selected like this:

http://paste.opensuse.org/view/download/33679280

Select the Left Button And Pick your Desktop:

http://paste.opensuse.org/view/download/40859221

Then Login as normal. For loading the nVIDIA driver the hard way as it is called, here are some other options you can use:

Installing the nVIDIA Video Driver the Hard Way - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

LNVHW - Load NVIDIA (driver the) Hard Way from runlevel 3 - Version 1.45 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

S.A.N.D.I. - SuSE Automated NVIDIA Driver Installer - Version 1.46 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

Thank You,

The pics aren’t showing James

[did u mean to select the “plasma” option on a once-only basis?]

I can see them.

Btw, James, there is a duplicate or a symlink in your /usr/share/xsessions you could probably get rid of (or is it a vm or a sandbox of some kind?)

no pictures here aswell.

Tried to select default and 1 under it (can’t read what is standing there, coz the letters are too small)

So far no luck

Update:

  • Deleted Xorg.conf (ois this one needed or not?)

init 3 - init 5 -> selected an option a little more down ad looked like plasma -> Bingo I have a login, my screen is way too big for my screen, but that can be configured.

How come I can see them?

I can see them from you (please_try_again)
However I now only need to resize my desktop to screensize.

Never done this, but as far as I know this should be done with the following command:
“xrandr -s 1280x720”

**Update:
**Strange this is not solving my problem -> after Xrandr - reboot -> no fit on screen!

FF ask me what to do with them, save or open with an application.

The reason is this:

The link is to download.

You upgraded all (what is all exactly?) without testing if the installation
worked? Bad practice, test first.

Probably no default desktop. Select one in the menu.
This is an effect of one of the upgrades.

The images are using SuSE Paste and it seems they don’t work for you if you are using Chrome but do work if using Firefox. These were taken using VirtualBox to run openSUSE 12.1

Thank You,

@OP: did you remove the xorg.conf ?
Check the display settings in GNOME / KDE?
Sure it’s the NVIDIA driver that’s running?

They don’t work for me using FF, it is the download link.

Guys,

May be I was not clear, but after selecting the kde plasme option while logging in it worked. However my current problem is that I have a desktop which is bigger than my screen resolution (e.g. I cannot see the taskbar).

I thought xrandr should solve this, but it did not. Have read a lot about settings in xorg, but I do not know if it is xorg or just kde which needs to be configured. Any help is still appreciated.

I got all that :D. xrandr is not going to work with the NVIDIA driver.
To get a proper idea of what is going on and what not, please remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf if present, reboot after doing so
Ditto for changes made to the files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, revert them. The options and values in the files should all be commented out.

Then boot into KDE, and check the display properties, adjust if necessary.

  • Deleted xorg.conf
  • Deleted nomodeset from kernel options (makes no difference)
  • xorg.conf.d - device, monitor and screen are all commented out, other files are "configured " but not by me (so not all commented out)

Going to reboot

  • Nvidia loads its settings from somewhere else (since it is 800x600 (set by the nvidia-settings)) however set to whatever doesnt work either.

Update:
Deleted my complete user folder /home/user
init3 -> init 5
Login screen where I needed to choose for plasma appeard, did choose plasma
Now settings are completely back to basic 1080i, with a desktop which is bigger than my screen.

What do I need to do now.

Did you get rid of the extra } that exists if you just click on link?

Oke, I solved it, after trying, searching more trying it seemed to be the edid problem. I have now configured my xorg.conf as followed:
