NVidia Driver Install Help

Hi all,

I have a fear of using the 1 click install method of installing the NVidia (Propriety) Driver for my Opensuse 11.2.

My Graphics Card is an nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX. I have attempted to use the 1 Click method to install this driver in the past, although once I have re-booted, the GUI or X-System would not load.

NVIDIA - openSUSE

I have clicked the NVIDIA drivers in the above link and noticed that my card the 7900 GTX was not exactly written there in the list of supported hardware.

I did try to install the NVIDIA drivers both the “easy way” (one click method) and the “hard way”/manually, though I failed on both occasions. I know I failed because I received X.Org error messages.

As I’m a newbie, I’m unable to figure out how to fix that, and ended up doing a fresh re-install. I want to avoid this.

*Is my hardware compatible? *Can I revert to a working system if I try and install the video drivers and it fails? *why didn’t the one step version install properly? what can I do to actually get the drivers installed?

Thank you all kindly.

Regards,

Paul
Can someone Please Please help me

If you still have the standard kernel for 11.2 then the easiest way to install is to add the NVIDIA repository to Yast and install through Yast Software Management.
Open Yast (System Admin) from menu select Software repositories and click the ‘Add’ button. You’ll see a list and you select Community (2nd or 3rd I think). Choose NVIDIA from the next list and then OK until your back at the main Yast window. Now select Software Management and go from there.

openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users

Hi all,

I followed Peteh100’s advice of installing NVIDIA in the repositories, and it installed the drivers automatically once I logged into software management, however once I rebooted, I was again welcomed by the Command Prompt rather than the GUI I am now in failsafe mode.

Please help me restore my GUI with the driver.
In the meantime I will read the above information for some assistance.

Check this guide…

I couldn’t get the Nvidia driver working even reading the guide, though I have managed to use the nv drivers, and at least I have my gui back!
