After nvidia (from repo) is installed, the fresh 11.0 shows up with bold fonts in desktop, taskbar, etc. This is really ugly to see these fat letters
You can return to normal with Control Center (I’m KDE3), just turn the font size from 10 to 9. but this is not a good solution because in some applications the default font size still pull out the bloated shape.
Is this a problem NVidia didn’t solve?
My details might be useful: ThinkPad T61p laptop with Quadro FX 570M, 14.1 LCD runs 1400x1050, openSUSE 11.0 for x86_64.
Try a different theme. I too have noticed the nvidia driver can cause a change in the font appearance.
For me with KDE3 I prefer Theme=Plastik, Widget Style=Plastik, GTKStyle = Clearlook. Play a bit, I think it quite likely with a bit of perseverance, you will be able to tune it to be just as good, if not better, than what you had before. That was the case for me.
I also ensured that I had qtcurve for kde3 installed. I think that is installed by default for KDE3 in openSUSE-11 but I had to install it specifically for openSUSE-10.2 and 10.3.
I share a taste with oldcpu, my style is just like that. These theme settings do no better thing. QtCurve is indeed installed, and works fine if selected, why need import from previous?
And I found a solution to this thing from why are my fonts so large with the nvidia driver - Ubuntu Forums. Like it says, it’s not a generous problem. It only affects large resolution screens. I can’t find where to modify this setting with YaST, so append the lines to Monitor section:
Option "UseEdidDpi" "FALSE"
Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
Gosh. … my eyes are so poor, I REALLY LIKE large fonts. Maybe I’m not the best one then to comment on this thread. The settings I noted worked really good for me.
Also, I noted you ran a gui with root permissions. Does that mean you logged on to X with root permissions? Thats a REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD IDEA if you did. I can’t over emphasize that. When one first logs on to X as user root the screen background consists of a number of bomb’s with a fuse burning away. There is a reason for that ! Its a warning from those who know, and its best taken into account. Apologies if I misinterpreted your screen shots, but don’t waste your time tuning your X as user root, as you should NEVER use it.
Thanks for the tip on root. Don’t worry, the only routines run super are YaST and Login Manager. Well, you remind me about my first linux, redhat 7.x, my red install CDs were used as often as root account :shame:
