nVidia Card Driver

Greetings and Salutations,

I have a bit of experience with fedora and ubuntu, but essentially I’m new to the whole Linux OS deal, especially openSUSE, so please forgive my noobness.

I’ve just installed openSUSE, and I’m hunting for drivers for my video card - e-GeForce FX 5200 I had attempted this with ubuntu and had no success. If I could just get a url to add to yast, that would be fine.

I know this is a little off-topic, but for future reference, I also wanted to know how I could check my OS version. If anyone could help, I’d appreciated it.

noob, thy name is NOT Jinseta (not if you have experience with other distros).

NVIDIA - openSUSE

Use the One-Click Installer that’s under “drivers.” A fine point: you may need to run “sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia” (the number zero, not the letter “O”) in a terminal, if your GUI doesn’t come up. Some people say that you should “nvidia-xconfig,” but I’ve never had to do that (sax2 does it for me). At any rate, once you have the GUI, start Konsole (or the Gnome equivalent), become root, and use “nvidia-settings” to tweak it to your liking.

cat /etc/issue

and

uname -a

Hi, it’s easy on openSuSE, all you need to do is add the nvidia repo
to your system and open YaST2, it will auto detect the driver and mark
it to install, the repo URL is http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.2
so, open a terminal and type (as root) “zypper ar
http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.2 nvidia”, then “zypper refresh”
and then yast2, go to software managment and search for nvidia

good luck

I would use cat /etc/SuSE-release to check the OS version

The sax2 command worked perfectly, thanks. My eyes are saved from exploring the massive curves of every single letter on the screen.

I guess I should take that as a complement, smpoole ^_^’ I do have a basic knowhow of unbuntu’s gui. In fedora, I can set up a network and admin apache, but I’m still unfamiliar with the personalized stuff. This is a first step to conversion from win for me, and being a WIMP makes it a little tricky (never liked cli)

I’m using 11.2 “Emerald” with KDE (better than gnome :stuck_out_tongue: ) Many thanks for your support. I look forward to working with the openSUSE community

First let me say WELCOME to openSUSE.

Reference how openSUSE packages graphic drivers, and some more rather basic details on how to configure them, I typed in this rather basic guide not too long ago that I hope will help a bit with such questions: openSUSE Graphic Card Practical Theory Guide for Users - openSUSE Forums

… if you have suggestions on how to improve it, please advise! Thanks!

Glad to hear it. One other fine point: Suse, by default, will try to set up your video system to the highest possible resolution. When you reduce it, it may not look right. The solution that I found was to leave it at the high resolution, then go into KDE’s control panel and simply make the fonts a little bigger.

Enjoy OpenSUSE.
