hello
with opensuse 13.1
installing the NVIDIA driver following what is said here
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers
under the title “Easy way to get NVIDIA drivers”
results in the openGl not working anymore with
Xlib: extension “GLX” missing on display “:0”.
what can be done
jean pierre aubry
Please specifiy which graphics card you use.
And please also post a list of your installed nvidia and kernel packages:
rpm -qa | grep nvidia
And the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log would help as well.
hello
it did not work yesterday
today on a fresh restart it does work again
is it possible that that some changes or update require one or more restart?
:~> rpm -qa | grep nvidia

are all of the really useful?
what is the .i586 one doing in there
how do i do to attach a file as /var/log/Xorg.0.log is quite long
upon this morning start mercurial which did work yesterday does not work anymore
i had to to reinstall a newer version (3.2) than the one (2.7) of the opensuse deposit
i am bit loosing my way with opensuse on this new machine
for almost 20 years it worked quite well and now it is a real mess
Normally not.
But the driver might need a second reboot under certain circumstances.

are all of the really useful?
Not at all.
Actually the G01 and the G03 driver even conflict, so it is just pure luck if it works.
And your G03 packages have different versions.
Remove all those, and reinstall the correct ones.
Please specify your graphics card (I already asked you to), otherwise I would have to guess which driver is the correct one.
And please post the output of this:
rpm -qa | egrep "nvidia|kernel"
That’s what I actually wanted to know, but I posted a slightly incorrect line.
upon this morning start mercurial which did work yesterday does not work anymore
i had to to reinstall a newer version (3.2) than the one (2.7) of the opensuse deposit
I have no idea about mercurial, or what could have caused that problem.
Please create a new thread for this in an appropriate sub-forum if you need help.
If the version included in openSUSE does not work or has a problem, you should make a bug report.
i am bit loosing my way with opensuse on this new machine

20 years? openSUSE is not that old…
But SuSE/SUSE/openSUSE works well here since 12 years, and still does.
card is nvidia Quadro FX 570sorry i forgot it

20 years, yes, right it was SuSE at the time 4.6 if i remember well
Ok, this should be supported by the G03 driver.
Run this then:
sudo rpm -e --nodeps nvidia-uvm-gfxG03-kmp-desktop nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-desktop nvidia-computeG03 x11-video-nvidiaG03 kernel-pae-devel nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-default x11-video-nvidiaG01 nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-default nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop nvidia-glG03 nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-pae
sudo zypper in nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop nvidia-uvm-gfxG03-kmp-desktop x11-video-nvidiaG03 nvidia-glG03 nvidia-computeG03
It should work then.
If not, try a second reboot, sometimes this is necessary after installation (although it shouldn’t be).

But I doubt that it was easy to install the proprietary nvidia driver back then…
hello wolfi323
it worked at first reboot
i had to run nvidia-settings as some config was destroyed but i suppose this normal
But I doubt that it was easy to install the proprietary nvidia driver back then…
well i started 2 screens in 2000 with matrox card, fully supported at the time, a quick run of sax and it was ok
a dream!!!
nvidia is hardly understandable
but i suppose this is on purpose
many thanks
how to mark the post as solved?
jean pierre aubry
Yes, it should.
But it can happen under certain circumstances (nvidia-uvm not installed, or nvidia in the initrd but nvidia-uvm not) that it doesn’t work at first, a mere reboot should “fix” it.
i had to run nvidia-settings as some config was destroyed but i suppose this normal
No idea. I never had any need to use nvidia-settings at all.
The config shouldn’t really be destroyed I think, but if it works now anyway I wouldn’t care.

Nowadays you do not need any config change at all normally, or run something like sax2 (which has been dropped therefore, as it didn’t support Xorg’s new configuration system anyway).

Not really. Just install the packages and it should work.
That’s what you actually did now…
Most problems are actually caused by YaST/zypper’s behaviour regarding recommended packages, upto 13.1 in particular.
many thanks
You’re welcome.
how to mark the post as solved?
You cannot really.
