Using openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 / KDE 4.2 on a NVIDIA 9600M GT.
Installed the NVIDIA 180.22 drivers via YaST software management, hit ctrl+backspace times 2.
And was greeted with:
“Error: API misatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has version 180.17 but this NVIDIA driver component has version 180.22. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version”.
Used the NVIDIA 180.17 beta drivers before this which worked fine, and restored those via
wget loooong nvidia url
sh NVID[tab] -q
So now I got a working GUI again at least.
But how do I do a proper install?
If I need to post the rest of the errors that I got, were are they stored?
Hi
The only thing I can think of is that ldconfig and depmod -aq haven’t
been run after the uninstall and after the install…
FWIW, I’ve just done another install of 11.1 on another partition using
the default kernel rather than the pae one, used the nvidia-installer
like I always do and no issues, it just works.

Seems like it’s only the log of the last .18 install I did, must have overwritten the .22 attempt from YaST software management.
Did a
**su
init 3
yast
**
and uninstalled the drivers. Exited yast, started it up again… installed the drivers from repository, start x… same error message as before.
So downloaded the latest drivers from the nvidia site, (this time on my server and put them on a netwerk share… screw those long nvidia urls with wget)
SH NV[tab] -q
Some messages about having to be sure that I’m at init 3 and that the kernel supported ‘module unloading’ or something like that. If I was sure of it it adviced me to reboot, so did that… and it worked.
Reminds me of windows… rebooting to fix things
But I got things running with the latest driver, so it’s all good!
I also had issues upgrading to 180.22 via Yast. It seems that the driver upgrade process is somewhat borked, as it either doesn’t remove the old driver or else doesn’t configure it properly. It took me some jiggery pokery to get things working again, and even now I am getting some strange graphical artifacts when I log back into KDE.
Sadly, the driver upgrade process doesn’t appear to be at the same level of useability as Ubuntu yet.
Well it wont pop up the message do you want to install by default.
Instead you have to manually active the nvidia repository, but I think that’s because openSUSE is OPENsuse.
But besides that… till this experience it was just as good, probably the first time I had done a manual install between one version and the next… which I suspect was the cause of my problems.
Mine is working , even though the driver ID is wrong (180.22 installed and ID shows 180.17), it works , so ain’t going to mess with it .
Something is up with Nvidia drivers .
