Nvida install issues

Cheers,
I have been trying to install the RC and it works. When I boot thou, It hangs on the video before the desktop. I am sure it is Nvidia issue. I can get the Live Gnome disc to work fine. When I try fail safe boot this also fails out. I have seen Nomodeset but I am unsure if this will fix the issue or where to put this command in. Thank you in advance.

Howdy,
Not sure what you are saying “it works”. However, I too have an nVidia card. I presume that you have installed the nVidia native driver and that is why you are getting the result you are getting. It involves a conflict between KDE4 Composting and nVidia. IF you have installed the Native driver you need to do the following:

In /home/user/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and in the Composting section either change or add Enabled=false

I cant get to the point to install the NVidia Driver. I install the Gnome Live disk and then when I select the Linux (since I have Windows also) I see the loading screen and I hear the sound load. Then I will see the screen change as thou it is loading the desktop. Then that is all. This is off a fresh load of Opensuse 12.1 RC.

Thank you for the info BTW.

I am about to go off to work so I won’t see your replies for a few hours. However, can you boot up to the desktop in failsafe mode?? And is it possible for you to switch to KDE??? I don’t know what to do for Gnome. If no one else replies, that uses Gnome, see if you can switch to KDE, then I might be able to help you. Which card do you have??? I have the 7300 LE using driver 285.05.09. Also, you might want to wait a few hours and the Grand Public Release will be available. Things could be better then.

Take care,
Chuck

No I cant boot into Fail safe. I have the issue with Gnome and KDE. I have this issue with other Distros also. I really like Opensuse and I wanted to stick with it.

Ok I have to ask some questions. THEY ARE NOT MEANT TO DEMEAN YOU IN ANY WAY. I just gota get on the same page that you are.

  1. Did you install it so that you are asked for a login -or- did you set it up to just go in??
  2. Did you install from a Live CD or from the DVD??
  3. Do you get the Startup options screen???

The latest is available for download. You might want to get that.

IF you get the Startup Options screen, you can set some boot parameters. Just strike an arrow key and it will stop the automatic boot. On the boot options line enter the following:

nomodeset x11failsafe vga=0x31a … then hit Enter

See if that will let you in. If so we can go farther.

Take care,
Chuck

Cheers,
THank you for the assistance and here is the info you requested.

  1. just go in??
  2. Live CD Gnome and KDE
  3. I get the select screen and then I see the lizard and then I get into the desktop and then nothing. No icons or bar.

nomodeset vga=0x31a

This let me get into the OS and Patch. As long as I put this in, Then I am okay. I am going to install NVidia driver next. I downloaded the GM DVD and it is error on burn. I have Downloaded via torrent and direct. I will try the Live disc next. I dont remember how to update from the RC to GM. Thank you for this help.

Faldiin,
I have been helped many times over the Net and I would love dearly to assist you in getting this to work. Your problems sound similar to some of the experiences that I have had. However, ALL of mine have been with a fully loaded DVD System and not the Live CD. So I am not sure how much of what I have to say will apply. Guess I’m gona have to start playing with the LiveCD’s from now on. Anyway, I have a Web Page that is dedicated to openSuSE 12.1 experiences at:
SuSE 12.1
In there, with perhaps some jumping around, you may find your answers. I collect them from all over the Web.

Thank you for your help Chuck. I got it all working last night and the Nvidia install completed. The issue was just adding nomodeset to the boot. That was all of the issue. I did download the 12.1 live disc for the upgrade. that worked also. I am in hog heaven with Gnome. Thank you again.

I used the following link info since you still cant one click install NVIDIA drivers.
