I was wondering how the community around opensuse feel about the Novell sale to attachmate and Microsoft’s Role in this?
I was thinking about coming back to OpenSuse until this deal came out… now I am not sure knowing that attachmate passed Suse patents onto Microsoft… (bit peed off with novell actually)
How does everyone else feel about it now that the deal has been out a while now? I would assume that alot of users would of been put off and moved on to another Distro because of this but I havn’t heard much from the opensuse community about it…
Funny alot of people wonder about Opensuse, and where it is going. As far as I can tell Opensuse is stronger then ever, it continues to make improvements and offers new features. Case in point the latest release Opensuse 11.4 is stellar. You said that you were thinking of coming back to Opensuse, but not now because of the sale. Opensuse is a community , there has been sales before and we are still here, we will face whatever comes, so this is just my 2 cents, I returned to Opensuse because I think it is the best Distribution, and I love the community of people here in the forums. To me that is more important then Microsoft or Attachmate.

I said the OpenSuse “Community”
On other words Opensuse “users”
I havn’t seen that many opinions and feelings towards what is going on… I thought that the Opensuse Forums would be flooded with Topics about something as significant as this news
but anways… would still like to hear peoples thoughts…

I wouldn’t worry. For this i can relay on my great magazine (oh ok, its not mine ) ct which made the comment that it is actually good for OpenSuse since it enables them to get back to their roots.
So, just install OpenSuse already.

There are in fact several threads about this on various of the non-
support forums here. I’m sure DD’s links point to more than a few of
them, and they’re comments by members of the community…
A hiccup that shocked me this morning was that when I went to goto openSUSE-forums I got this ominous ERROR 504 from Novel but only openSUSE forums were unavailable. I had just instructed someone to go to the forums to get an answer and they called me right back to say the forum no longer existed, so I tried right away and got this could not connect to server response. A few hours later all was well so I assume there was maintenance going on.
As for any progression along the deals/no deals path, it’s not an issue as I always burn DVD’s of each new release that I choose to install and download and back-up updates so should openSUSE disappear even temporarily I can continue un-impeded.
mmmmmmmmmm
I don’t Trust Attachmate. They do not have the resources to continue suse’s growth (without help)
Companies Always play the part at the beginning and give their reassurances but actions speak louder than words. Something is brewing… Microsoft is behind all this so whatever reason is behind all this i’m sure it is to benefit Microsoft in the end… I smell an OpenSuse Fork coming…

They’re buying Novell and SUSE as they bought NetIQ. NetIQ seems to have
done pretty well. Common sense says you don’t buy a company in order to
not grow the business - private investors in particular want a return on
their investment.
I’m not worried (but I’m also an employee, so perhaps biased).

openSUSE will always be here in one form or another, - the way I see things, we’re going back to our roots, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all…
yep…i’m kinda surprised the deep pockets of Redmond wasn’t able to
sway Justice to lean a more Gouge friendly way…i’d guess Steve has
thrown several chairs over this ruling…
heh.

Q: What do you get if you divide the circumference of a jack-o-lantern
by its diameter?
A: Pumpkin Pi!
I know the history of SUSE from reading only, but I also hope that it is going back to its roots as this history seems pretty amazing to me.
And I feel that openSUSE deserves a higher ranking on Distrowatch
So lets hope that Attachmate will show some action rather than words. But I am also not worried or concerned about the future because openSUSE will stay - I am really sure about this. So if I were you, Kaddy, I would install it and have fun! Its a great system - this is what counts. :good:
