Whats this hatred, people have for openSUSE out side of this community? Never really got it. openSUSE seems good. Why all the flaming about how Novell sucks? I know it’s something to do with Microsoft but what?
Novell has an arrangement for it’s business distributions (Enterprise) to bring more compatibility between Linux (Novell) and Microsoft - but it’s rather limited and a hot topic -Or was.
A great deal of FUD was raised about it.
Is it not the case anymore then?
Yes
Microsoft and Novell Announce Broad Collaboration on Windows and Linux Interoperability and Support
There was/is cooperation on interoperability with MS based systems, and IIRC there was an agreement on software patent infringement/non-action. You can google for the original Novell announcements if you have time to spare. However, beware since there was great FUD and a bad reaction from zealots, nutters, and active MS-haters, that probably caused openSUSE to lose popularity. To counter that, a strengthening of the openSUSE brand and more independence from Novell could help. I’m sure the openSUSE Board had this in mind with the new strategy proposals that are being discussed in forum and on mailing lists.
If Novell sold openSUSE or stopped sponsoring it. What would be it’s future? And is this likely to happen?
Sorry I just don’t have time to get involved in speculation
More independence doesn’t mean Novell sells or stops sponsorship. That would be pure speculation and IMHO unlikely as it wouldn’t help Novell or its commitment to oss. There was some discussion about this in various threads concerning a possible sale of Novell, so I suggest you search for those fairly recent threads if you are interested in the arguments and yet more speculation, albeit from a different angle.

What if…
Balmer got a hair weave…
Ellison became a nice guy…
IBM started calling themselves International Business Machines…
There’s a lot of “what ifs” out there…
Sorry just curious.
