Though I no longer have the problem (installed Nvidia drivers already), I’d like to ask about the issue.
When I first fresh-installed openSUSE 12.2 x86_64 with GNOME 3.4, on the very first start after installation was doing last settings, desktop started well (though bluetooth icon didn’t showed up, but nevermind). Then I restarted (and bluetooth icon showed up), and sorprise: desktop completely broken. Only visible thing was the upper task bar, but I wasn’t even able to use it well. Graphics were all messed up and broken, I couldn’t open applications… In a nutshell, it was so freaking broken that it wasn’t possible to work on opeSUSE at all, unless I switched from graphic mode to console mode.
I fixed it by reinstalling again, and first thing I did before ever restarting was installing Nvidia drivers using a LAN connection. Do you have any idea of what happened here?
Nouveau works for me with KDE, but not with Gnome 3. To use Gnome, I have to force fallback mode (which I prefer anyway).
Many people are having problems with nvidia cards. It depends on which card you have, as to how severe the problem will be. You seem to have found a good solution.
The nouveau driver might be broken, in some sense. But the real limitation is that the device specifications have not been made public, so the driver has to go with whatever has been found via reverse engineering.

Exactly that happened to me. I did a clean install and it broke straight
after it finished. Crazy screen, unreadable. I tried booting to runlevel
3 so I could install Nvidia RPMs but even the Yast GUI invoked by
command “yast” was illegible. I had to reinstall again from the start
and then install Nvidia RPMs ASAP.

I had some problems with nouveau but not as severe as yours. Some items
in drop-down menus would appear blacked out but hovering the mouse over
them would usually clear them.
I eventually got fed up with this and tried nVidia driver from the
nVidia repo. The problem was solved but, after a while, I noticed the
machine running slow and saw that xorg was averaging around 30% cpu
usage. I don’t know whether that problem was related to nVidia but
decided to try another clean install of 12.2.
A couple of days after the clean install, I have not felt it necessary
to install nVidia driver as previous nouveau problem has not reappeared
so far! Also, cpu for xorg is averaging about 2-3%.
It’s too early to say whether the problems are cured but it wouldn’t be
the first time that a re-install has “fixed” a bug for me.

I have two PC’s running the nouveau open source driver, a nVIDIA 275 GTX & a GT 450. The older 275 card works perfectly with the nouveau driver in every way while the GT 450 works fine, but the new Plymouth grub 2 loading display does not work and gives a picture that appears to be out of horizontal sync. In both cases I have updated to kernel 2.5.6 where the nouveau driver is located, am using the KDE desktop and feel the newer the Linux kernel, the better nVIDIA support you will get. I am not using kernel 3.6 right now due to Samba networking problems I have run in to using that version of the kernel.
