I recently upgraded from Leap 42.3 to 15.0
Before the upgrade, the graphics worked fine. After the upgrade, the graphics display is very slow and updates strangely.
The hardware has not changed.
As a side note, I have been using Suse since 8.3 and some time ago I gave up using the nvida proprietary drivers as they
always put me in upgrade hell so I am not going back.

Do you have Mesa-dri-nouveau installed?
Otherwise you’ll use Mesa’s software OpenGL rendering, which is slow of course.
Other than that, more information will be needed, like what desktop you are using and maybe the Xorg log to see whether nouveau is actually being used.

If you use the repo to install it, there shouldn’t be problems with “upgrade hell”, though I don’t know what you mean exactly with that.
Unfortunately, nouveau is still not “perfect” or even stable on some systems. NVidia does not support the development in any way AFAIK, they have to reengineer everything (and the project is of course highly “underpowered” as usual).
So the proprietary driver may be the best option anyway.
PS: AFAIK there is a kernel update in the queue already with some fixes for critical nouveau problems in particular.
Mesa-dri-noveau is installed
the Xorg.log file says it is using the info in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d but all of those files are empty (every line is commented out!)
the log file indicates a very confused attempt to set things up and I am not sure what driver I get in the, but it is not nouveau!

Yes, that’s normal.
And Xorg will try to load the appropriate automatically in that case.
It will try several, and use the “best” one that works.
That’s probably what you refer to with the below “confused” statement…

Well, it would have been useful to post the log to let others have a look at it to see what goes wrong.
But if your fine with using nvidia now that’s no longer necessary of course.
