I installed openSUSE 11.4 on my notebook (Packard-Bell EasyNote LJ61) and started the system. I logged in and KDE appears. After some minutes, I started firefox and thunderbird and the computer shuts down.
After resarting, I installed the fglrx driver.
After restarting again, I let the desktop stay, and let him from 16:30 o´clok to 18:00. He stayed so. Then I started firefox and thunderbird and the system shuts down again…
Here my specs:
Packard Bell EasyNote LJ61
AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core QL-64
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
openSUSE 11.4 (i586) KDE 4.6.00 release 6

“shuts down” is not a sufficient description. Does it spontaneously reboot or
does it sit there with the caps lock light flashing, or does it do something else?
If you are getting a spontaneous reboot, then you may have a memory problem.
Is there some info on the kernel log? do you see it? do you monitor
you pc temperature? and as Larry say, how do you exactly define “shut down”?

Yes I too have faced the same issue but during installation.
I tried installing on my Compaq AMD Turion x64 machine, when it is about to install and around 80% the laptop powers off just like that when the installation is about to finish.
I have faced this issue around 10 times, I have tried with Open SuSE 11.3, 11.4 , SLED 11 SP1, SLES 11 SP1, I was annoyed and finally gave a try with OpenSuSE 11.2 and it started working, but now my Wireless network drivers does not support Open SuSE 11.2 kernel, so back to square 1.
Any one has any clue why the laptop shuts off ??
However OpenSuSE 11.2 went fine and I have been using it for like a month as of today…
Are you talking to me yet? Well, I thought it was an overheating problem first, but then I bought a new cooler for my notebook, but the system crashed still…
If you have an acpi problem you cooler dosn’t work, old or new it
just don’t move, some notebooks (like hp pavillion) have the acpi bug,
so you can try to check if you have that problem, add acpi=off noapic to
you kernel parameters on boot to try it
