Not prompted to enable online repositories during install

I was looking to do a new install on a computer and I was hoping to install the MATE desktop environment. My laptop uses the Intel 7265 wireless chipset. During setup I am prompted to configure my network connection and I am successfully able to scan for my network. I enter my passcode and it goes through the rest of the steps, but never prompts to enable to online repositories. Since MATE is not on the DVD I am not able to install it.

Once the system is live (I installed xfce) I am able to connect to the network no problem. I am not sure if this is an issue with actually getting a connection or if the problem is with the installer not loading the repositories despite having a connection. Is anyone else having a similar issue, or does anyone have any suggestions? The Leap 15.1 installer connects fine and prompts me to add the online repos.

Once installed you should be able to install Mate. It is a good idea to have more then one desktop installed incase of problems.

There is a point in the install where you can chose programs to install or not. This should be then be connected to the repos or if no Internet just the installer repo. Mate is in thee main repos so should be available.

No. Mate is not on the DVD image ( which has the biggest package selection ). If you do not enable the online repos, it will not show up.

You’re entirely right,
And I describe how to install Desktops like Mate during the initial installation by following the screenshots in the slide deck of my openSUSE presentation… You select “Common Desktop…” as your Computer Role selection (Not Gnome, KDE, XFCE, Server, Transactional Server), then when the Install presents a summary of your selections before actually installing, you click on “Software” which will launch Software Manager for you to select and install other packages including MATE

I find it odd if you weren’t prompted to install online repositories as shown in my slide deck.
And yes also, if you were using a NET install you would still need to “install online repositories” to gain access to the extra packages, just because you’ve connected to an online repository is not enough.

Note that you cannot select MATE earlier as you would Gnome, KDE or XFCE… You cannot choose MATE but that’s an Install construct problem and not because you aren’t configured with online repositories.

The alternative if there is a bug would be to not install any Desktop, select “Common Desktop” which will install only a Window Manager but no Desktop.
Then, after you’re installed and verify you have the “OSS Update” repository enabled, run the YaST Software Manager and you’ll find MATE as well as other Desktops available for install.

I tested this, and quite early in the install phase I got prompted to activate the online repos. You may not have setup networking correctly.

Very odd. When I try the Leap 15.1 image everything works fine. Following the exact same steps on Tumbleweed does not seem to get it connected. The net install image fails as it is not able to connect.

I know there was an issue with 5.6 with Intel WiFi, could it be related?

Wicked wireless is broken on Tumbleweed currently without any fix ETA. May be we should push for reverting wpa_suplicant until wicked is fixed.

Yes, could be a pragmatic option for some.

Thanks! This helps to clarify. Unfortunately this laptop does not have Ethernet. Is there another way to connect to WiFi avoiding wicked during the install?

Maybe try using Tumbleweed live media. The live media uses NetworkManager for its connection. Install from there uses the NET installer. As far as I know, it continues to use the network connection that you configure from the live desktop. You can play it safe by skipping any network configuration during the install.
