Not possible to have wayland?

I’ve just installed Tumbleweed KDE and I’m surprised to find myself stuck with X11. I haven’t been able to find a way to switch to Wayland. Thank you for your replies.

Based on what I read above in the quote … you do NOT select “Plasma | wayland” and then click Restart. Doing a Restart will do a warm reboot (which resets the Login choice back to default)

At the Login screen, you select “Plasma | wayland” , then type your user’s password, then press ENTER to login.

You need to do Logout, not Restart. Then you will see that screen. You probably have autologin enabled, and then you will not see that screen. Only when you logout, not when you restart

Not if the user has autologin AFAIK, then it picks the last chosen session. ( which on openSUSE unfortunately still is X11. I’ve seen this before. But that is ~9 months ago, it may have changed.

Well, I know it is, but it might have been some SDDM change. People who use autologin, mostly don’t know the concept of logout vs. reboot, simply because they never see SDDM.

As the TO uses Plasma, there is a setting for SDDM in systemsettings. It covers completely the auto-login case.

Systemsettings–> type SDDM-> Behaviour->Autologin->choose Wayland or X11 and the DE

Hmmmm.
I just did some testing on my Leap 16.1 (yes, 16.1).
At the login screen, I select “Plasma | wayland”.

After the login …

  1. If I choose “Logout” … the login screen shows “Plasma | wayland” as the default choice.
  2. If I choose (after a login) Logout, then “Restart” … after warm reboot is complete, the login screen shows “Plasma | wayland” as the default choice.
  3. If I choose (after a login) “Restart” … after warm reboot is complete, the login screen shows “Plasma | wayland” as the default choice.
  4. If I choose (after a login) “Shutdown” … then I start the machine again … the login screen shows “Plasma | wayland” as the default choice.

So, for me, after I have chosen “Plasma | wayland” at Login screen … it is always the default choice, no matter how I “leave” the system (Logout, Restart, Shutdown then turn back on). I’ve never used Auto-login (and never will).

I’ve got that in my KDE neon, but I haven’t seen it in Tumbleweed.
