Not longer possible to sign in to KDE from the GDM login menu?

I have always used to install Gnome as my default desktop and just added the KDE pattern during the initial installation. It has always worked flawlessly afterwards to switch and logon to KDE from the GDM login menu over every openSUSE generation (and several SUSE/SLED as well).

Since I upgraded my 13.1 and Tumbleweed systems to Factory (‘zypper dup’) Gnome works ok, but I have had no success to sign into a workable KDE from GDM. The logon attemps hang already on a green (Gnome) background with a small black widget and a disk symbol in the middle.

I haven’t tried a fresh new Factory installation from a iso snapshot.

Other experiences with this behaviour in Factory ?

This is a bug in gdm 3.12.

Use something else for now like kdm or lightdm., if you want to login to KDE.

There’s an old saying: “a watched pot never boils.”

Today’s version: “a watched bugzilla never comes up.”

I suggest “lightdm”. A Gnome user probably won’t be happy with “kdm”, because it does not automatically unlock the login keyring when you login to Gnome.

Bugzilla is down this weekend for upgrades. It was announced.
You mean that?

Yes. The estimate was that it would be up by 1700 MDT which, I assume, is Mountain Daylight Time. We are well past that time, and it is not up.

Thank you for telling that. I installed lightdm and it works to login also to kde4.

I learned the following:

  • lightdm didn’t become available among the DM options to select in YaST2 Edit /etc/sysconfig
I had to edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager manually

  • lightdm didn’t save large font (and menu) selection from it’s universal access menu (as gdm does).
After logout the lightdm shows default smaller fonts.

You can still use the sysconfig editor, you just have to manually type in “lightdm”. If you try SDDM, it’s the same deal. The text of the sysconfig file just haven’t been updated with the newer alternatives.

Yeah, I see that. Thank you.
