Not getting KDE boot or login screen

I’ve been running openSUSE 11.2 within a VM using VirtualBox 3.1.2 with Vista x64 as the host OS for quite some time now with good results. Yesterday I went to reboot the VM and VBox made some comment about 3D not working and needing to install the VBox guest additions (which were already installed). After rebooting and seeing the openSUSE splash screen, I now get a solid purplish display with no activity. I’ve tried running “sax2 -r”, re-installing guest additions, running the repair CD, and other things but this problem has not gone away. Aside from reloading the OS, does anyone have ideas on how I might fix this?

My guess is that you had a Kernel update and the drivers did not reconnect. It may be that you need addons that are for the new kernel. Might want to check over at Sun about that.

That sucks if that’s the case, especially considering that there doesn’t appear to be any way to uninstall the guest additions! Is there a way to rollback system updates?

Sure go into Yast and select the earlier Kernel in versions tab.

Rolled back to prior kernel version and re-installed VBox additions but that didn’t fix it. However, this time I noticed that I had an X mouse cursor on the purple screen that moved and brought up a menu when I clicked a button. Turns out I was in the TWM window manager. So I selected “Exit” and it brought be back to the openSUSE splash screen where I could log in and select KDM as my session (which worked).

Why the heck did my windows manager setting change all by itself? (Worse yet, why does TWM show a completely blank purple screen?)

Have no idea even why you have TWM installed. It sure is not in a standard install :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it gets in there with a server install, not too sure though.

I certainly didn’t select it when I did the install. Nor did I select IceWM or Metacity, both of which are also selections available under Session Type.
