Not beeing able to boot into graphical env without nomodeset

Hi,

I have a problem. I’m new here.

I have a DELL Optiplex 745, and I was trying to install SUSE 12.2 (64-bit) on it. The install has gone smoothly.
Now, the issue … after instal an reboot, instead of the login page, I get a uni-color screen. I cannot do anything except power button.
It does not work to go to the command line, or to login via SSH.
Now, if I append nomodeset to the kernel options … it works (but I cannot optain a sadisfactory resolution)
I am new here … so here are a couple of things I could think of:

uname -a

Also,
You might consider if you have an nVidia GPU and this hasn’t been resolved before now this “nomodeset” problem is specific to the default nouveau driversetup and can be addressed simply by adding the nVidia repo, doing a zypper update to get the appropriate proprietary driver and installing. When the new driver is installed, it will come with its own proper config file.

HTH,
TSU

If you got openSUSE to install, you might remove your xorg file and restart, perhaps something got messed up. Open up terminal and run the following command:

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf-backup

Once complete, reboot and see what you get. It also possible to upgrade to kernel 3.5.3, where the driver is located:

S.A.K.C. - SUSE Automated Kernel Compiler - Version 2.76 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

Another person has suggested loading the mesa 32 bit files from YaST. Go into YaST / Software / Software Management, search on mesa and load the libs with mesa and 32 bit appended to their names and restart. This is the shotgun approach, but your Intel video should work with kernel 3.4 unless we are missing something.

If you have an add-in nVIDIA or AMD card installed, that would be the actual problem. If so, let me know cause we need to talk about the fix more.

Thank You,

  1. Thanks DD … I will look at the link
  2. TSU, I do not have any other video card just Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller. Thanks
  3. Hi James, thanks
    a) “you might remove your xorg file and restart” - openSUSE 12.2 and I do not have an xorg.conf
    b) I will try S.A.K.C. - SUSE Automated Kernel Compiler - Version 2.76 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums
    c) I will also try loading the 32 bit libraries (I was thinking about that … but I couldn’t find a reason for doing so)
    d) I do not have NVIDIA or AMD

Thanks a lot for your responses, I will keep you posted.

Florin

Just an update:

b) Updated to 3.5.3 :

Linux IPHERE 3.5.3-2.10-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Sep 8 17:45:17 EEST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

No luck. the same thing happens . (Oh, and, nice script… Thanks James worked like a charm)

c) installed the 32-bit libraries … no change

Thanks,
Florin

yours is most likely a video problem…have you yet followed the hints
in the link i gave?

I’m working on it

modifying 50-device.conf:

intel driver freezes the computer
i810 doesn’t work , but also doesn’t freezes the computer
i915 doesn’t work, and it does’t freeze the computer, maybe because of this:
