Noob atheros help

Hi there

i have a laptop with a atheros (242x i think) wifi card

i installed madwifi with zypper successfully (i think it worked)

so how do i go about actually getting it to connect to a network??

sorry to be so blunt, i spent ages typing out a 500word post then IE decided to crash :’(
