non-responsive login screen at console

I have OpenSuSe 10.3 with pretty much latest patches. It was working fine and I am not sure if it was one of our frequent power outages or something I did, but the login console in runlevel 5 is totally unresponsive. I can move the mouse but none of the message boxes respond. Won’t let me type in a user name. Nada.

I do have vncserver running and am able to get to it that way or with a telnet session.

Is there some set of files that I can just blow away and set it back to defaults?

I have it set to NOT auto-login.

Thanks,

Jim

C’mon folks. Don’t make me have to reinstall this system.
Gotta be a way to reset to defaults.

I can’t even get enuf response to change session to Gnome so to try that GUI

You have a problem here as the repair is broken in 10.3
Unless anyone else has a better idea i would use the dvd to do an “upgrade”. This should work. Though back uo your data first you can use a live cd to do the.
Not the best solution but it should work make sure you don’t format your /home
You will have to do all the updates again and it might complain about new sofrware.

Edited /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and saw some weird looking settings so set them back to default. Will see if that does it.

Does switching to a text console by pressing Alt/Ctrl/F1 still work?
If so, you could try logging in as root, switching to runlevel 3 via
the command “telinit 3”, and runnig “sax2 -r” to reconfigure your X
server.

If Alt/Ctrl/F1 does not work I’d suspect your keyboard is fried.

Turned out to be the displaymanager file. I compared it to another 10.3 installation and fixed it. All is well now.

Thanks,
