Non graphical boot in 12.1

Hello, ive had lots of problems, some of them post here in my upgrade from 11.3 -> 11.4 and finally 12.1. Fortunately ive been solving most of them.

Now i have one little problem… when i boot my desktop pc and choose the kernel i want to use, then it enters in “old linux” booting with all the letters and information about kernel modules, services started etc… I want to come back to the green background an a lizard moving its eye. Hopefully i could change the ugly lizard with Irina Shayk :slight_smile:

Hope you could help me.

so, i guess you have several choices available on that first green
screen…so tell us which one you choose and also

please show us the terminal input/output from

sudo cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr and probably someone can spot the problem…

note: that is an L in .lst and not a one 1…

and, personally i don’t upgrade because it often leads to all kinds of
little problems…so, i always do a fresh format and install, then join
the data back in…usually works cleaner…ymmv (others always
upgrade) tell us which method did you use

As you noticed i have two desktop kernels: both of them happens the same, also if i change systemd and systemV

I used zypper dup from 11.3 to 11.4 and then to 12.1…As said before i had many problems from 11.4 to 12.1 that have been reported and solved.

I had to change the default display manager in /etc/sysconfig from gdm to kdm ( because gdm gest stuck on blackscreen just before the login window). I have nomodeset because i use a nvidia propietary driver.

because somehow this one is pretty badly mangled…that is, depending on
if i’m looking at failsafe or not, mine has some of these:
“splash=[something]”
“vga=[something]”
showopts
apm=off
noresume
nosmp
maxcpus=0
edd=off
powersaved=off
nohz=off
highres=off
processor.max_cstate=1
nomodeset
x11failsafe

especially, if the vga=[something] is missing you will see " ‘old
linux’ booting with all the letters and information about kernel
modules, services started etc"

so, what happened to all of that stuff??

You have two kernels because we probably told you to do that. One is the
previous version, just in case.

Your failsafe entries are bad, they miss lots of parameters. And your
normal entries miss at least the vga=something which would start the
framebuffer display in terminal 1.

Cheers / Saludos,

(from 11.4 x86_64 “Celadon” at Telcontar)

1 - Yes i have two kernels just in case…sometiems i like to have 3 just in case ( 2 desktop and 1 default).

2 - I also have noticed that when im shuting down or rebooting system it appears the same verbose letters and not the green screen with lizard and the progress bar counting down.

3 - I put nomedeset because of my nvidia drivers. If i put in boot options vga=0x31a for example i cant see any difference. Perhaps Denver has reason but i put splash=silent in every entry.

Thanks.

did you keep a copy of one of the menu.lst before the broken one you
showed us?

do this in a terminal and copy/paste the full input and output back to

this is what my input/output looks like

ok, you edited out important information that needs to be put back into
your menu.lst, why i do not know, but you need to add back–and i
suggest you do this by using YaST > System > Boot Loader:

in the “Desktop – openSUSE 12.1 - 3.1.0-1.2” section on the line named
“Optional Kernel Command Line Parameter” where it now says
“<snip>part6 splash=silent quiet nomodeset showopts” add

vga=0x31a

one space behind showopts

and, in the “Failsafe – openSUSE 12.1 - 3.1.0-1.2” section on the line
named “Optional Kernel Command Line Parameter” where it now says
“9285c6f0ac1f” add

showopts ide=nodma apm=off noresume
nosmp maxcpus=0 edd=off powersaved=off nohz=off highres=off
processor.max_cstate=1 x11failsafe vga=0x31a

beginning one space
after what is there now

and, in the “Desktop – openSUSE 12.1 - 3.1.9-1.4” where it now says
" showopts" add

vga=0x31a

one space after showopts

and, in the “Failsafe – openSUSE 12.1 - 3.1.9-1.4” section on the line
named “Optional Kernel Command Line Parameter” where it now says
“9285c6f0ac1f” add

showopts ide=nodma apm=off noresume nosmp
maxcpus=0 edd=off powersaved=off nohz=off highres=off
processor.max_cstate=1 x11failsafe vga=0x31a

but, before you do that i advise you to do two things 1) read the caveat
in my sig and 2) make a copy of /boot/grub/menu.lst as
/boot/grub/menu.lst-BROKEn0

and, when you finished the editing and saved it…boot with it and make
sure it works and then be more careful when editing either directly or
in YaST…

and, need i say: be more careful and/or don’t mess with stuff you don’t
understand yet? (ask first)

I havent change anything in 3.1.9 because im afraid i cant reboot my system....

Sorry this is my new menu.lst… i had a copy/paste error… The same happens… If i boot with Desktop 3.1.0-1.2 it boots with all the verbose and letters but the letters are little.

If i boot with failsafe in 3.1.0 the boot is with big letters.

Till today i had big letters when i boot and halt the system…

hope its ok my bootloader configuration…

Change only the desktop entries, do not touch the failsafe entries. Those
are for emergencies only, do not alter them now that they are correct. On
the desktop entries, the “vga=0x31a” parameter controls the size of the
letters, you can change the numbers. If you put “ask” you will get a list
and a prompt of a value. Choose one till you get satisfied, then put it
permanently.

then, i wonder if you have customized your bootsplash in some breaking
way…

because your menu.lst looks ok to me, and it looks to me like you
should not be seeing all the messages flash by…

i wonder if you have been trying plymouth or some of the other
bootsplash themes???

and, what desktop environment are you using (forgive me if you said, i
can’t seem to find it this second.

by the way, i do not believe i can help more…because once you got a
good menu.lst i’m pretty much out of ideas (except the bootsplash
thing…and, i can’t help with that–i disable all that crap so i CAN
see the commands go by…which is the way it should be.

What does DistroWatch write about YOU?: http://tinyurl.com/SUSEonDW

1 - I use kdm and kde4 as dektop.

2 - I havent change theme.

3 - Robin:listas: it doesnt boot or shut down in graphical mode. Perhaps a bug or a misconfiguration of bootsplash… I dont care the size of letters at the beginning as i have my resolution 1280x1204 set with nvidia settings

Any ideas are welcome…

The first thing I do on every installation is disable the splash screen
during boot, as I want to see all the letters flashing by. If the splash
doesn’t work, I do not know how to bring it back. It may be that the
resolution of the framebuffer is not the same one as the splash wants, so
you may try changing resolutions in the vga parameter.
